this evening!

still have to hook up the throttle cable, mount the boost gauge (hooked up, but needs a home), and get the LM-1 installed to tune. but man, it sounds much better than it did the last time i had the turbo installed.

The throttle cable is hooked up (for now) and is functional. I altered the chrome top to the air cleaner and was able to close the trunk lid! Looks total stealth now 8) Still need to decide where to put the boost gauge and I need some gas  I ran out!

Yeah, only that guy wouldn't be caught dead posing in the back of a 412.

But seriously... I'm glad you finally got somewhere with it. I haven't been this relieved since Vietnam ended. I was 14 and starting to get really nervous.

vwfye Sun Mar 11, 2012 10:47 pm

man... you're old!

Turbo blanket arrived... one more step!

vwfye Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:24 pm

Turbo blanket is installed. Ran the engine to see what the LM-1 had to say... then after 5 minutes I went and put my hand on the blanket. Blocks that heat just fine!

Anyway, the AFR readings are anywhere between 16.3 and 14.5 between 1000 and 2000 rpm. It is down around 12.3 at 4000 rpm all with no load.

supaninja Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:39 pm

at 1000 i'm at 12.5, and at 2500 i'm at 13.5, figure out what the motor wants, mine likes to idle rich. Adjust your idle mixture to get the most vacuum you can.

vwfye Mon Mar 12, 2012 7:12 pm

i will have to recheck. the 2 idle screws were not set evenly on the primaries.

More small stuff. Found that the oil feed to the turbo was too big, so now I have an 1/8" line feeding the turbo instead of the 1/4" line. Also started to fab up a tab to mount the throttle cable to. My little wheel worked, but not well enough... so plan B.

vwfye Sat Mar 17, 2012 5:08 pm

Took the car out for a drive today while it was dry. The car, according to the boost gauge was making 8lbs of vacuum in 1st and 2nd gear and 1lb of boost in 3rd or 4th at 4000rpm...

:?: not sure what to do next. Can't find any signs of an intake leak at this point.
Also, measured the temp of the header into the turbo 5 minutes after I shut off the car. 362F going into the turbo and 360F coming out at the down pipe.

Talked with some folks that have more knowledge than me (that's most everyone  ) and they suggested I remove the wastegate and block off that outlet and see if I get any boost. If so, we know the problem. If not, they we eliminate a possible problem. Oh joy...
