| Curious about the Lingo... What is a "fat Chick"? Is that a Ghia after '69 or '71, or are all Ghia's fat chicks. |

I gather the term "Fat chicks" applies to later air-cooled VWs. As VW made changes to conform to new stricter safety regulations, cars from the late 60s up progressively received bigger tail and signal lights, thicker/wider bumpers, larger mirrors, taller seats...etc. The basic shape and design was the same but some consider it less attractive... |

Not much to report. The car is about where we last left it. The kid now has an old Datsun 510 that takes up most of his time so the Ghia has pretty much taken a back seat for the last couple of years and hasn't been driven much.
Sorry to disappoint! |

Try looking here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/dic/f.php
Fatchick Slang term for most air-cooled VWs that use 4-bolt wheels, such as 68 and newer Standard Beetles, Super Beetles, Bay Window Buses, 1970 and later Ghias, 1970 and later Type 3s, etc.
In my limited experience, it usually is used in reference to the later models that have the big bumpers, turn signals, etc... just as BobNorman stated. Hope this helps! |

Some consider 70 on up to be fat chicks, but most apply the term to 72 on up. The change in 1970 was to the taillights and front turn signals/running lights. The bumpers remained the same except for shorter towel bars. The biggest changes came in 72 when the taillights went extra large due to safety regulations which required a minimum area by law. Also supersized were the bumpers as already mentioned.
I personally like the looks of the early taillights and nipple blinkers in front, however, they become a safety issue in modern traffic due to the small size and lack of brightness (especially for 6v cars). For a year-round daily driver, the 72 up are best suited in terms of visibility.

| The Ghia taillights changed in 1970. My late '69 'vert has the cute taillights and a glass rear window - I think it's the best looking body VW ever made. |

Careful about making sight-unseen offers. It has the frame of a '71 coupe, a fiberglass nose section that rotates up to fuel the vehicle, and all the wires are hand-laid due to the heat damage to the original harness during the welding procedure for the frame swap. She runs like a top with the DP 1641 which has a mild Engle cam and 041 heads, and she steers straight as an arrow. I commute from Melbourne to Orlando in it, 150 miles a day.
But we do digress. The fat chick we're discussing is certainly worth saving. |
