I am sanding and chipping and preparing Miss Daisy for her new paint job. I have a 69 bus, currently in black primer. I did remove the bondo on the front, which revealed nothing but steel and some surface rust. The roof has surface rust and then there is minor spots around the typical bus places... I am having a local body shop paint her, but want to do as much of the prep as possible. For 2 reasons... $, and also I want to be a thorough as possible about getting any rot spots cleared up.
Question #1: How berserk should I be? I removed some bondo off the front and steel brushed it to the edge where I was back to original metal. Should I just be sure it's a smooth transition or is there something else I need to do?
the roof has rust spots, but nothing severe. Someone recommended a product that turns rust to primer and then sanding.
I want her to look pretty, and like everyone else, I have a budget, shich has a wedding and a baby in the forecast! So, I want to make this paint job last, but not go broke.

por-15 will "convert" rust to a primer-like surface.
my advice is this: talk to your painter, because if you start doing work that she/he feels will not be acceptable they may have to redo work causing you a feeling of wasted time and costing $. Someone will probably post more info on por-15 I haven't used it much..
By the way, who are you taking it to?
I looking to get a repaint of my 64 bus this year ( i live in mass ) but in didn;t occur to me that R.I. might have been prices.
if you get a good idea from the painter what they need to do a good job you can bring you vehicle by occasionally or show them some photos of your progress they might be able to steer you away from unecessary work etc.. Depends on how busy your painter is
have fun - and keep caustic chems away from babies!! |
