| blasting it would be the easiest. Or you can just repowder coat it as long as it is not too thick already. You could sand down the powder coat by hand. |

You can blast it off but depending on what kind of equipment you have you might be there awhile. If you do blast it make sure you ground the rack. The powder coating tends to build up charge during blasting and can shock pretty bad.
At work we generally strip as much as we can with aircraft paint remover. It's the same stuff eastwood is selling. You can buy it from any decent automotive paint supply place. Buy the low odor stuff if you can get it and wear good rubber gloves and safety glasses. I would also keep a sink nearby incase you get some on your skin. It won't be fun but it can be done.

| Mike, Thanks for the tip. I was wondering if the Eastwood product was any better than what I could get at my FLAPS. |

My dad's shop is in Barberton, Ohio about an hour south of cleveland. I help him out when I'm not at college or my engineering co op. We don't do a lot of VW stuff but we have done some.
The other thing you may want to do with the aircraft paint remover that sometimes helps is to wrap the part in tinfoil after you put on the paint remover. Let it set for half hour or so then go back with a putty knife and scrape away. It helps to keep the moisture in the paint remover. I would imagine a roof rack would be a pain with all the tubes either way you do it.
The fastest way to get it off would be to find someone with a molten salt striping company. The problem is the salt would get in the tubes and eat them away from the inside. It's great with a solid piece of steel. The total time to remove the powder in that case is about 3 minutes. Goodluck with it let me know if you have anymore questions.
