In the time I have lurked and tried to be helpful here I have noticed alot of disdain for the waterpumpers. From comments that the injection is controlled by black magic to all watercooled enthusiasts are "ricers"
I grew up in the aircooled scene, My first car was a 63 bug, I've had a 72 ghia, a 65 bus, and a couple more bugs. The first time I rode in a rabbit I was hooked. Here was a vehicle with most of the charm of a later bug but it was safer, had heat, was more comfortable and most of all it actually handled really well.
I compare the vintage watercooled scene of today to the aircooled scene of the 80's. Before the prices started to go up and anyone could jump in and have a blast with their cars.
As far as the "ricer" comments go Here are some pics. I see no rice here.
And if you know what your looking at this is the watercooled equivalent of an oval window bug.

| A1s are pretty cool. It's the guys that go out, buy ne A4s or A5s and then pay someone else to install another $20k of crap in them. |

ALL vdubs are killer IMO and if I had the disposable income I'd be glad to pick out parts for someone else to install for me  . Lord knows they'd prolly be on the road a lot faster!

Water-cooled Vanagons get respect here!
VW Vortex seems to have the forum market cornered on water-cooled VW's. I like the layout better here, though, and the Vanagon forum here is very helpful and entertaining.
Also, you can get some amazing deals on watercooled stuff in the classifieds on the Samba compared to other places.
I'd like to see the watercooled community expanded on the Samba. |

I like those early waterpumpers, though I don't care for the "skateboard" look of the wheels on that green one in the 4th picture.

I missed this thread the other day. I don't think the watercooleds are that maligned here. I don't mind them, didn't mind working on them either when I was a mechanic, and now that I don't do that for a living anymore, I don't mind talking about them either. And I drive about 15-20K a year in my 85 Golf.
In the early 90s, I had the opportunity to buy a 75 Rabbit once from one of my co-workers - the original owner. It was in very good shape too - they'd had recall work done to the cylinder head when it was new and that was about it. Bright green and the paint was still nice. But I wasn't interested at all in Rabbits though at that time, this was before I knew anything about them really. I had my two bugs going and they were enough for me. Still, even though the carb setups on those early Rabbits can be a pain to deal with, I look back and wish I'd have gotten it - I saw it around town a couple of times after that and whomever got the car didn't take care of it.

| I have a fanpowered and there are two other waterpumpers in the family. My brothers 89 MkII Jetta and my fathers B5 Passat. All of them are great cars, all have their charm that I've only seen from VW's. My fathers is an excellent long distance cruiser that I never get tired driving, my bug is the funnest of the bunch and the jetta is a great blend of them all. |

1982 i junked my 66 deluxe 1300 bug and figured i'd find another one without any problem. after looking at just so much crap for weeks(incl one with a golf/rabbit engine in the back), i saw an ad for a 74 scirocco 1500TS. went for a look and a drive and was impressed enough to buy it.
18 months later i picked up a 63 bus for a good price and used them both for a while till i sold the scirocco to an apprentice in a local garage.
my son and all other kids preferred to ride in the bus.................

TheSamba is a great resource with its classified section. Unfortunately, the forums -- not just water-cooled forum -- are littered with mudslingers and those who embrace derogatory terms like "ricer" and "fat chick." The latitude this site allows for this mischief makes it difficult for real enthusiasts to come here on a regular basis. |

wrong
it becomes difficult for real enthusiasts to come here when you bring the attitude with you.
if you go into the rants looking for a fight,.you will get one..
if you argue in the "open" forum, you will get one or the thread will get moved to the rants or deleted.
i for one will give anyone an asschewing in the rants but i DON'T outside of the rants and that's the difference.
if you are too thin skinned, then maybe being on an open forum isn't for you.
i will, as always, remove anything that is either, brought to my attention as abusive, or i catch it myself.
but there isn't any reason to think you will not get a fair shake here.
don't let the "jerks" get to you,.. they are only "fishing" to see what fools they can catch.

It is not wrong. The original poster made a valid point. There are lots of people on other forums who don't come here anymore. I come on rare occasions.
It is not a matter of being thick-skinned. It gets tiresome when one asks a question and the response is, "Sell your fat chick for $50 and get an oval" (or something similar for water-cooled cars).
There is a reason this particular forum is so quiet. Being told to ignore the troublemakers doesn't make it more pleasant or less tiresome.
It is up to the moderators on what is acceptable and what isn't. They don't seem to care too much. Meanwhile, most people who feel as I do just don't come here ... but they are still voicing their opinion of this place even if you don't see it. |
