Probably an easy question...
Is this a badge or foglight bar? What is it and what does it fit?
I bought it because I thought it was Type 3 but it's too short to fit between the bumper overriders. They are no manufacturer markings.

| Looks like it was chromed? I thought the inner support bars were painted but I am not sure. If it was chormed later, maybe that's why there is no EMPI mark? |

It is chromed but now has a lot of surface rust. |

| those go on the INSIDE of the bumper, to act as a stiffener. I have a set on my Oval, and I'm glad I did (and had a spare back one) or I would have lost my metal vert W decklid to a rear-ender. They simply mount between the brackets (hence the cutout on each end) and with longer carriage bolts, go through the bracket, and bumper, and the little } shaped piece. I have seen them in square tube, like the one shown, and also made from round tubing. When I moved, I tried to give away the round tube set, but no one wanted them, so into the trash they went. AFAIK, EMPI bars went on the outside, with the little spacer pieces. Maybe EMPI sold the inner ones, too, I dunno. |

Ok, is it worth anything? I'm guessing no.
Since it goes on the inside of the bumper, I can see why it's all crusty.
Thanks! |

| Everett, do you have both of them? The shorter one would go on the front bumper, and the longer one (obviously) would go on the back... if you don't have the set, find a pre-'68 Type 1, and stick it in the center of the bumpers; that will tell you which one you have. When I had a few, I always seemed to end up with more front ones than back ones, so if it's a back one, it's probably worth more (Those damned 6 volt brake lights are hard to see) than the front one, although still not worth as much as a front and rear set. |

Those Square bumper stiffners are worth about $5-$10/ea But the earlier (Pre '59) round versions that Dave "threw out" are worth about $30-$50/ea and are alot more difficult to source.
BTW, the square style are also currently being reproduced. |

I have a couple sets NOS in the box if anyone needs some. I didn't figure that they were worth advertising.

Great. Thanks for that, Glenn. All you had to do was come to Escondido when I was clearing out, and you could have had a set.
They aren't a bad idea, as I mentioned previously, the square tube ones saved a convertible W decklid from being munched and a scrawny 18 year old in Mommy's Aerostar from getting severely thrashed... |

Alweays a day late. First your collection of VW Trends, and now these bumper stiffners. What else did you throw away? |

Actually, Rob de la Grange got most of the really neato stuff, but when Randy Carlson @ Oldbug bought the '55 and the 21 window, he kinda got to pick through the collection for anything that looked interesting to him. Then, after that, it was "open season" on everything, people were invited to come by and take what they wanted, then, after that, it went into the dumpster.
I still have my Joe Vittone-signed GTV wheel, a bunch of never worn T shirts from events I attended over the years, and a few other misc items. Other than that, I'm pretty well cleaned out... |
