I bought a rabbit diesel it runs great but it takes so long to get up to 65 i was wondering if anyone knows if and how to turn the injection pump up and or if its worth it or not thanks

I wouldn't mess with the IP's on these cars. I do have experience with diesel benz's so maybe I can be of some help

Last time filters were changed?

Couple of things you can do

Advance the timing, loosen the 4 bolts on the pump and rotate it TOWARDS the head.....

Also, on the pump you will see where the 4 fuel lines go to the injectors, a slotted screw with a 13mm nut, screw that in if you can and back the idle down
that will enrichen it a bit

thanks im going to try the 13mm nut and screw first before i mess wit the pump how much should i try to turn it?

Running...idling....as you turn the screw after loosening the 13mm, the idle will go up...

you then back down the 10mm idle

I can make my Vanagon Diesel smoke like a freight train, or lean it out to where hardly any smoke comes out even at full gas

also, bump your timing a bit to advance. lean it to the block to advance

how much should i turn the pump?

weinerwagen Wed Feb 21, 2007 7:25 pm

you mean the en richen adjustment?

Depends, sometimes Bosch put a seal on it, you might want to look to remove the seal

as for advancement, you loosen the bolts just enough to move the pump, start the engine, let it idle up and run for a bit they lean it towards the head

the knocking should be more pronounced.
Drive it and see what you think

i looked at it i see the enrichment screw but do i have to advance the pump i really did not want to mess with it and how many turns should i turn the enrichment screw up?

advancing or retarding the injection pump by rotating it is not a good idea without a dial indicator. you could end up leaving it far from the recommended setting and receive little benefit. Look elsewhere for your lack of acceleration;compression, filters, timing belt off a tooth, etc.

i did not move the injection pump itself cause i know you need a dial indicator alls i did was turn the screw on the pump a 1/4 turn then idled it back down

If you are used to a '90 gasoline-powered Golf as your username would indicate and you have a regular diesel VW from the mid-1980's or older, it is possible you are expecting more than it will give.

My 1981 Pickup was a great car but it did not like accelerating and anything higher than 65 MPH was something it did reluctantly -- especially if the a/c was on or if it felt an incline coming on. It was night and day different from my wife's current TDI Golf.

I loved that Pickup. I wish I still had it. Boy, do I wish I still had it. But one had to accept the fact that life was going to be good from the right lane.
