The last time I painted a car (almost 20 years ago) there weren't many types of paint to choose from. Seems now there are too many choices. What would you suggest for a garage job and a less-practiced painter?
Thanks in advance,

IMO single stage acrylic enamel with a urethane hardner additive,
but there is ( as usual ) alot of varying opinions. read through the old threads, some good current ones on this first page,as well as some site links for info on various products. good luck, good prep, good paint, good job! |

| I'd recommend using PPGs OMNI brand line. It's very affordable and can result in a very good looking paint job for the novice. |

| I used Azko Nobel 2 stage paint. sprayed a tinted poly sealer under the color coat. painted it in my garage in a home made booth. even put in some pearl on the first 2 clear coats. turned out excellent. went on real easy. very smooth, made the color sanding a breeze. |

Urethane's the best. Acrylic enamel is cheaper but doesn't go on as smooth. I'd use the hardener, and I like an additive called "Smoothie"- gets rid of almost all of the "orange peel". Make sure you wet sand the primer, and put on a SEALER before the paint! Sealer helps make it "fish eye" proof.
OH- and use plenty of patience.... and spare no pains on prep! GO FOR IT!! |

ODcustoms, Laquer has been banned due to all of the solvent evaporating into the atmosphere. Sometimes, however, paint shops will have Laquer that hasn't sold lying around, but it is no longer being made.

slamd67,
Did you get many "bumps" in the paint from dust and crap getting underneath?
That is my biggest worry about doing the paint myself. |

| ya, there is ALOT of little things like bugs and shit in the paint. i'm going to color sand that out though. its actually not too bad, its just really on one fender thats REAL bad, but the rest just has some little dust specles. i also hung plastic around the outside of my garage. it will all color sand out w/ some 1500 grit, then ill buff it out. good luck. |

j.pickens,
all I did was staple plastic sheets from floor to ceiling, taping the plastic to the floor, open the garage door a few inches and get some 50 cent filters for a heater, tape them to the bottom of the door all the way across and the floor. make the plastic run to your man door and staple it to the walls there, so ti form a sort of funnel. I had 3 box fans I stacked up and set it in the doorway. wet down the plastic and the floor before you spray. it helps keep the dust down. the fans sucked all of the overspray real well. It worked great. I had a little dust in the paint. it came out in the color sand. there was no overspray that settled on the car at all. It turned out great. I'll try to get some picks up. |

| I still go buy new fresh laquer from my local paint supplier, but it depends on your geographic location as to if you can still aquire. Price lately is another thing all together. I was talking to the regional PPG rep and he told me that although laquer was still available due to the new sanctions on it that they are currently pricing it out of circulation. I spent the same money for a quart of concept that they charged for the laquer now. I still however use laquer for misc. spot jobs on old paint. Just all depends on whether or not you are willing to due the finish work , or if you are concerned with keeping a certain patina to the job. |

ODcustoms, where are you located? I'm on the East Coast in Connecticut, and I always thought that more restrictions were placed on the West Coast than in the East.
