Anything you think of with your eyes, as well as possible fair market value. |

| I am not an expert but here my opinion,I am going to point the bad because the car is pretty nice looking overall , the front wheel arches look rare in the picture , hood gap in front also look a little over bite , strikers shouldnt be painted, Ugly tires, I mean ugly. pull handles are missing. the reserve price is fair to me. |

The Hinge Cover looks like it has been re-stamped , the Interior Mirror is Wrong and the Sunvisors are missing and are extremely hard to find.
I would be asking what the motor # is , if it is a US spec car it should have Overriders
Looks decent though, hard to do one for that price, but just a few years ago this would of been too much |

| Radio Block-off plate? I would be interested to know when the car was repainted and the antenna hole filled. I know very few Porsches without radios from that era. Overall I like the car. If it has spent its entire life in Arizona there should be few rust issues. I would like to know more about the motor and its history........but all things cosidered it is a "fair" price to start with. |

I went and saw it this morning.
It was a fairly quick look and he sort of shuffled me off after 30 minutes when a friend showed up. The seller was nice but a little bit too "salesman" for me.
I didn't test drive it. I did hear it run.
The car came from LA 4 years ago when he bought it from a friend. I don't know if it was originally from there.
My immediate impressions based on my very limited 356 knowledge:
Floors and cross-members and so forth appeared solid.
There was some surface rust on the inside passenger front floor.
I could not see the entire driver's floor from inside but it appeared solid.
It's undercoated EVERYWHERE, which I take as a bad sign and possibly hiding surface rust. Undercoated under the front hood and in the front apron too.
The paint is shiny and presentable but yes, I think it was a quicky job some years ago.
Wiring under the dash needed some clean-up.
Engine has a minor leak.
Engine and transmission were fairly dirty.
Lower front center apron possibly had some previous repair work. It looked like an unprofessional repair, unless originals are not very clean there?
It had some sort of header system on it that I don't think is stock.
Heater was missing some connector pieces and was not hooked up from what I could see.
It may have been the original engine but I did not note the engine number. The owner said he ran the numbers and it was the correct month and year. |

As is the case with most 356's.............things are not as they first seem. |

Ha-ha, so true with everything.
The car is up to $45K now on eBay but I think the auction will be stopped this weekend. Someone else was flying in this morning and coming out and another person was coming tomorrow from S. CA if it wasn't sold.
He did say he got a lot of contacts about it and was trying to drill me on whether the car was something special? I said I wasn't aware of anything super special about it. It is an early '57 as opposed to a late '57. |

Door strikers shouldn't be painted X2
Body No and Paint No's have been restamped X2. Given these have been restamped, you'd want to check that the engine number hadn't been restamped to make it a matching numbers car.
Ugly interior material, I mean ugly :? Shouldn't be shiny like that.
Too many question marks for my liking - especially for that price  |

| The '57 I may buy in Chicagoland looks like a similar condition car, but is for sale for $24K. See my other thread in this forum. |

Not being super familiar with 356s, is this a common thing? It strikes me as fraudulent.
We are referring to this, correct?

I had already pointed that out earlier in the thread! Not so common, but not out of the ordinary either... When the Hinge cover is Missing(most commonly when repainted removed, and never put back on) it detracts from the over all originality of the car( my Opinion drastically) .....so to make it more original looking ,you get another cover and get a repro badge and restamp it. ! Some would say dishonest , but I would rather have a new restamped one then none at all.
Are you looking to seriously buy a 356 Everett ? |

You did indeed point this out earlier  But I agree with you, I'd rather have a restamped one than none at all, but restamping an engine block number is just plain wrong, but I think we're all in agreeance with that! |

Everett,
You've received some solid advice and valid opinions from a great number of people in this thread. If you're seriously considering adding a 356 to your fold - and it seems that you are - you may also want to contact a couple of 356 experts here in Southern California. Bob Campbell and John Willhoit have both been in the 356 business for aeons, and each will either have, or know of, a truly straight 356.
Good luck with your search for the right 356!
