View original topic: vent wing window latch repair help

The knob broke on my '69 vent wing window. Can anyone tell me how this is repaired? It looks like I have to take the whole frame apart and the glass out. I hope not.
Thanks,
Big Al

I'm afraid thats the only way to fix vent latches. Don't worry, its not that hard. Take the glass out of the frame. Be careful not to damage the gasket between the frame and glass. If you have to replace the gasket it becomes much harder. Drill out the rivets that hold the latch to the frame with an eight inch bit. go to a hardware store or even beter a store that specializes in nut bolts etc. buy three or four pop rivets that fit the holes in the frame very snug. buy or borrow a pop rivet tool. the extra rivets are just in case one dosn't fit tight or has to be redone(saves another trip to the store). after puting the new latch on file down the ends of the rivets on the inside of the frame. this makes the glass fit much better. dont file too much off or the rivet will come apart. Use your best judgement on this. If the old gasket is shot you should get some eurethane for instaling glass at a auto body supply store and use that to put the glass back in the frame. I did that after bending one of my frames trying to use a new gasket. good luck. Mark
