View original topic: flared fenders for my notch
John Lee Thu Jul 10, 2003 12:00 pm

I have a 67 squareback and a 64 notchback. I just put 195-50-15's on all four wheels on my 67 and the fenders rub a little, a lot when I'm turning. When I build my notchback I want to drop it even closer to the ground and run the same tires. How would I flare the fenders out enough to not rub, Or should I just take it to a specialty shop????????????? Help Me

Hi John,

I'm working on a video that shows how to widen your fenders yourself using simple, inexpensive hand tools. From an undetectable small stretch to pretty fat. You stretch the original metal so there is no welding unless inner structures need to be remove for access (Ghia rear). Stretching, smoothing and design tips are included. Type Three fenders come off so they could be widened on the bench using my techniques. In the video, 914 fenders are widened 1-1/2" or so, a Bug fender is widened, as well as a Ghia fender. I have a picture I can send through email of the 914 fender part way done if you are interested. My email is: ghiafab@msn.com

will 914 gt flares work? they have about the same curve .

914 GT flares are a bubble type flare. In my opinion they do not look very good...even on a 914. A more subtle blended flare is preferable (again, my opinion.

Hi Troy,

Yes you can. I'll be doing a front Bug fender in the video and maybe a rear as well.

When will this video be ready. And is it something that anybody could do? I'm not real good with body work. I never got into it, but I would like to.

Hi John,

The video should be ready in a month or two. It is easy to get the shape, the more dificult part would be the finishing work. The video will have a lot of good information, including some metal-finishing advice, but you may want to augment it with some body work videos or training, or maybe you have a friend who has done some body work? Or do the widening, and take it to a shop for the finish work.
