I have a chance to strip a 92? 16V Passat at the local junk yard before it gets crushed. Everything on it is good except the automatic transmission. Will any of the parts off it fit my A2 Jettas? I only have until Thursday before the crusher comes.

Very little is interchangeable between Passats and Jettas in general. A '92 Passat was the next to last year for the third generation platform in that line whereas you are looking at interchangeability with a second generation Jetta, thereby nullifying things even further.

If your Jetta has the troublesome 16-valve engine and so does this '92, there may be some useful parts worth salvaging for future headaches. If your A2 has the 8-valve, let the Passat be crushed.

Thankfully I got rid of the 16 V when I bought it and put in an 8V with CIS fuel injection and an automatic tranny for the wife. I was hoping that I might be able to upgrade to the better brakes on the Passat.

'Troublesome 16-valve' my ass. It's only trouble if you ignore the timing belt replacement interval.

If you can grab them, the front knuckles/'spindles' from the Passat will fit the A2.....and the accompanying 10.1" front brakes come with them. My '88 16v GTI has Passat front brakes, and they work very well compared to the stock 9.4" units.

The only possible drawback of the Passat brakes is that you can't run anything smaller than 14" wheels.

What kind of fuel economy do you get with one of those 16V engines? Mine had broken a piston and ruined the cylinder when I bought so I put the 8V in so I would get better fuel economy (or so I thought) but I'm only getting 16 mpg .

I don't drive in the most fuel-efficient manner....and the norm is about 20-22mpg as I've seen it. I've cleared higher 20's on a highway trip.

Not bad for a car with about 220K on it IMO.
