The paint on my '62 is getting pretty old, starting to flake off in some spots, going to sand down then take to a friends shop. Can anyone give me steps for good prep? Any Help Appreciated, Thanks.

Get a DA sander and a big compressor. Get a box of 80 grit discs and get started. Is that what you need to know? Just get down to the factory finish and you should be ok to do the bodywork from there.

Are you planning on taking it to metal? Or do you plan to feather the paint edges?

If your going to metal, just get it blasted or aircraft strip it.

If you are feathering the edges of the flaking paint use some 180 DA grit to get the best and quickest feather edge.

hey dude...my paint is flakey aswell...and some is great...and other spots its shit...all i got told from a painter is, as long as u got all the main panel damage smooth and fixed, all u hafta to do is get all the colour on the car down to a uniform level. if the paint is good...sand and paint straight over, if not, then sand all the bad off...then prime, then colour.
just one thing. i dunno if u guys got'em over there, but there is a product i use made by 3M..its a quick strip disc and it removes all the paint down to metal, then polish's the metal, ready for etch then prime etc...they are sooooooo good...less time wasted by sanding
