What is a good color tint and paint brand for black paint? I'm in the planning stages for painting my beetle('56). I want it black and I want it to have depth. What are your opinions? I'm not going for the original look at all.

I'm in the dangerous, know a little and this is fun, stage of painting. But I'm still realistic. What can you mix with black paint? Metal flake(of course), but pearl, etc... I just want to achieve depth and a wet look. Clear coats? I've been told you can mix them into your final coats of color. Is this right? Or will that end with the dreaded "Rattle Can" look. 8)

Thanks in advance for your .02

I painted a Harley with a black called Granada Black. Its a Honda car color in the 90s i think. Its has very fine gold flake in it. It looked very good on the bike, but i don't know how it would look on a bug. It was base coat-clear coat and looked deep. It was Dupont Cromabase brand.

well kolapi, black is black is black. You can mix it with pearls and such. If you are going for that super wet look then you will want to throw on about 2-3 base coats of black, follow with a couple 4 coats of clear ( you can add some color to the clear).
I would shoot the car 2-3 base coats, 3-4 clear coats then wait for it to dry. I would then wet sand 600 grit and get out all the imperfections, and finally shoot another couple of coats of clear. You should have your mirror wet look paint.

If you start adding flake or pearl to or over your black you will loose the deep look your after . Stock VW code Lo41 is a good black ,Sikkens has a Jet Black , House of Colors has Deep black or True black (can't remember , have to look it up ) . Just use one of theese and alot of clear over it cut it flat and buff away .

Ahah! You're in luck, I just finished spraying my 58 hardtop beetle black about 3 hours ago. I have had the car for about two years, and last summer I did a full ground-up body off restoration. I'm talking cut out the rust and weld in new panels, strip it bare and begin the relentless pursuit of perfection! After I had the whitewall bias-ply tires on black and red stock rims, I let it sit. I let it sit in perfect DuPont basecoat clearcoat... Until last weekend. I have decided to change everything. After talking with camerod, I bought some Porsche discs and some Porsche wheels. As soon as the paint dries enough it's going to him for a complete suspension drop!

Anyway-here's the deal... I finished spraying two coats of clear full of SEM Silver Glitter! In the sun, this car looks like a carnival ride! It's not crazy, subtle enough for a smooth look, but still enough to grab attention. All over the first paintjob- sanded wet with 600, and then scuffed with gray pads and scuffing soap... I will post some picture links soon, cuz this car is cool! I can't wait to get it out and about...

Good luck to you!
BTW, I sprayed it in a booth that I built at home over the course of a month and a lot of thought. You could do just fine with plastic and a few fans. If you're thinking of painting outside...UHHH, you can do that too, but make sure it's in the shade and there are no overhanging tree branches... Darn spiders love automotive paint!

I'd also like to see some pictures. That sounds kinda like what I want. How much silver glitter did you use?

Thanks everyone for info!

I just reassembled the car in order to move it back into the shop... I will have pics in a day or two... The amount of glitter is amazingly small! I dipped a teaspoon measuring spoon from my kitchen thinking that would probably be ebough. I ended up dunking the spoon into the little jar of glitter, getting a little bit of glitter to stick to the surface and then tapped it into the clear right before I put it into the gun... about 7 cents worth of a $35 jar!! In the sun, the color goes from ordinary black to a neat starry night look! I promise to send out a few shots soon.
