I am getting ready to shoot primer (PPG urethane) on my 72.. Could someone list some basic steps to follow?? I have the parts down to bare metal.. I am not wanting to screw this up. Is it possible to screw it up?? LOL

You need a washprimer or epoxy primer sealer or surfacer to put over the bare metal... I advise the washprimer. After that coat flashes well, begin your primer process. What compressor and primer gun are you using, is the car bare as a bone or still toting some painted areas, have you done this before?? Answers to these questions will help others answer yours. Good luck in your quest to improve your VW!

Hey Rshortk.. I have a 30 gal. 150 psi.. I don't have a gun Yet.. I am getting a DeVilbiss HVLP gun. Not too expensive.. $80.. Might pick it up this weekend. My car is getting very very close to complete bare metal. There are small spots of old paint/primer (mostly original primer)I need to get. Here is what I have for primer: PPG K 36 PRIMA Urethane Primer Surfacer.. I have never done this before and feel I am competent enough to do the primer and have someone else shoot the paint.

Good work so far. The gun ought to do well, hopefully the "tip" is at least a 1.6 or a 1.7 mm for the high build stuff. I have sprayed tons of K 36- It works very well! Get a really good respirator for the fumes and make sure any left over paint areas are sanded with either a 180 grit for a DA sander or 320 by hand... These grit preferrences vary from prep guy to painter so just make sure you don't see any sand scratches when the primer is dry so you can count that the primer won't shrink back and reveal them a few months later. Have you or are you going to fix any body damage or dents prior to priming?
:-D

Hey Rshort2k. Thanks for the info.. This REALLY helps.. As for body work I have to do a small panel and a few small nicks.. I spent the last two years welding and replacing cross members, Luggage rack, and fixing rusty wheelwells. If I sandblasted the area's would I still need to hand sand/DA sand??

I'd try to stay away from blasting areas that are large open spots of sheetmetal. What spots will you be blasting?? Post some pics!!
Good luck

I was planning on blasting the door jam's and some parts of the hood.. I have already blasted the inside of the rear hood and it came out great. The outside of it I have go over with hand sanding. Too many Chicken scratches.. I will take some pic's and post them..
