| I went to pick and pull and found really nice front bucket high back seats from a 96 chrysler voyager van, worked really well in my 71 bay, just drilled four holes and fit right in, also found two more for back of van, used the pedistools for those, they look great and work well also. |

Busnerd and Hippo,
Like what you have done. My only concern is height. at 6'4'' I am almost touching the ceiling as is. Do the seats you have installed raise the sitting position? Also I have a 72 bus and would like to continue to use the child's cot above the seats. Is it still possible with a seat upgrade such as yours? I would be ok with removing the headrests at a camp site but I need that cot for our 4 year old.
Thanks

As mentioned, the Plump Truck has one for the driver side but I'd like to somewhat match the passenger seat to it! :-k
not the best pics, but you can see it's a long thing.
Single cab passenger seat, if you find one snatch it up they are like gold in the states.[/img] |

Sean Gallagher wrote: Unless you are concerned about keeping it 'stock', look into acquiring some vanagon seats for your bay. I found a '87 vanagon (at least I think it was an '87) and I took the seats out and slid them right into my '79 bay. Although they didn't match color wise, they are a 100% improvement. Since this is only a daily driver, I wanted the creature comfort. Someone on here will know about the sliding track limitations of '73 bay or just do a search. The other option is to go with the Wolfsburg pads, but I think I read in a recent post some bay seats may not be a perfect match for them exactly. Even if you had to move the rails, vanagon seats are a huge difference.
I know this is a really old post but i just picked up a pair of some really nice Vanagon seats for my 77 just like the ones above. I got them at Ecology on half off day. 10 bucks each! When i installed them in my bus the outside arm rest hits the door when i close it. anyone else have this problem |

Yes if you have the plastic fresh air vent on your door it will hit. You have 2 options here.
1. Pull the plastic vent off the door and leave the armrest on.You'll have holes in the door panels from the screws for the vents though.
2. pull the armrest off the seat and leave the vent on the door.
I did #2 with mine but I wish now I would have done #1 cause now I have a hole in the side of the seats where the armrest was and it looks kinda crappy.
Good luck.

| My bus does not have the air tubes installed on the doors and the arm rest still hits the door when closed. |

That's odd they usually don't hit without the air vent on there. :-k You'll probably have to just take off the outside armrest then. you'll just have a slit in the side of the seat like this.
I ended up ripping the seat alittle more cause I had to beat the hell out of the armrest to get it off. |

No not any time soon anyways. I have to many other things to do my Westy before I even worry about recovering them. I'll probably put a patch over it and call it good.

These came from a junk yard . They were out of a Honda CRV ($300 I think) and a LITTLE modifying.
Heated leather and very comfy- but if you are tall they sit too high. I'm 5'10 and they are good.
Or you could redo the ones you have like the PO did in my 73
There are lots of choices. I guess it comes down to budget and preference

My mother always used to say "Blue & Green should never be seen" They look alright together though. I got a green westy with a blue canvas the PO fitted. :D |

Sorry to pull this old thread but the padlock's been coming up a lot lately so . . .
I'm happy with my seats but want to add the Vanagon inside arm rest to both. Has anyone successfully done this? I'd love to see pics of the install if possible. |

tho the Vanagon seat in my '79 is super comfy and supportive on a long trip, the best thing I ever added to my '72 was a tractor seat with pneumatic and spring support. It's fully adjustable and once dialed in make even off road smooth. Got it from Northern Tool for 'bout $100 on sale. And, one only has to drill a few holes and can keep the old mounts for returning to stock.
Good luck, Mark |
