| Gee. Sorry you haven't got any helpful replies yet to this question. What's a "sport" bug? |

Sport Bug was a special edition Super Beetle in 1973.
It came in two colors yellow and light metallic blue. All trim was black. Had Recaro style seats and thick grip 3 spoke steering wheel. The wheels were stamped steel mag style like the later model convertibles except they were 5 1/2 inch wide instead of 4 1/2 inch. I got a response on another site. Originally they had 175 -70 15 which I have had no luck finding. I will probably go to the 185s.
VW had a series of special editions in the early 1970s to beef up falling sales. Baha Bug in 1972, Sport Bug, Sun Bugs, Love Bugs, jeans Beetle and others in different markets. I will try to post a link to a site that has the details to the special editions if I can find it again. Everyone has their favorite bugs. I happen to like these special editions because for 70s era bugs they are few and far between. They also had more interesting color selections. |

| check out sebeetles.com for more information on limited edition special edition and "tuner". Many of these not available in U.S. but interesting accessories options. |

Hey, if you're interested in these special edition beetles check out the following website: http://www.1302super.com
I have a 72 Marathon Beetle (aka World Champion Beetle) that is painted the Marathon Blue (a silver blue metallic--its beautiful, people always comment on it everywhere I go). They only made 6000 Marathon Beetles in 72. Now, a lot people in the VW world don't like these beetles, I guess they are not "vintage" enough for them, but hey that's their opinion. I love my Marathon Beetle--I've lowered it, added some period correct accessories, and it looks awesome. As far as I'm concerned, I like em all, however each owner likes to make it--bone stock or radical custom.
Oh yea, I digress a little here (sorry). Have you checked out Coker Tires for the tires your looking for?

| Hi, I have a 74 Sun Bug edition that I just started working on restoring. I am going to check out the websites above, but maybe others who are working on or have completed their restorations could offer any tips they have. Most of the websites I find deal only with older beetles, and talk bad about the supers. Any additional "super" friendly sites that others know about would be welcome. |

I have a Sport Bug and have not found the 175/70-15's. It was recommeded to go with 185/65-15. The speedo will register just about the same as with the 175's. Does continental make a 185/70-15? That would be better I think.

Continental and Pirelli both supplied tires for the Sport Beetle. The 175/70/15 has long been unavailable in the US or Canada. Imagine my surprise when I saw this size being offered in Mexico. Made by Goodyear, the model is GPS-2 and its DOT legal. If you know someone who lives near the border, maybe they could go into the Goodyear dealer in Mexico and get you some. They are pricy, at 780 pesos each. That comes to around $75 each. I bought two of them and brought them home. Only two more to go.
Don't bother going into your local Goodyear tire dealer, they can't get them for you. I tried already. |
