Any of you Porsche folks ever have your cylinders re-Nikasil-ed? I understand they Nikasiled the 911 for years. I have a 98 Jag with a 4.0liter engine that is losing its coating and thus is having tons of blow by. Was looking into getting it re-Nikasiled. Wondered if you know anybody who does this. (option B is to re-sleeve the cylinders with steel liners but am guessing that would cost more). Thanks for the sorta Porsche related questions.

Its losing its coating???? are you sure its just not the rings are bad?? The coating is incredibly tough but yeah it can be recoated. I'd ask Charles at LN engineering to do it.

The Jags were notorious for losing the coating. THat is why they went back to iron sleeves after two years. They claim it breaks down due to a combo of high sulfur fuels and if an engine overheats (which amazes me that run on on air cooleds). And yeah, the jag had a thermostat stick and spiked its temp. It could be the rings and since I don't own a fiber optic scope, I'll be excited if that is all it is but enough people have had issues with the coating that I am hedging my bets. I'll ask LN Engineering. Thanks

I've had alot of M/C cyl's done at U.S Chrome of Wisconsin I think they will plate anything, don't have there # but if u do a search u can find them, madmike

I eneded up calling USChrome and you are right, they'll plate anything and stand behind it. But cost wise, I am gonna go with boring it out and using iron sleeves from LA Sleeve. Thanks

If something is plated and u sleeve it it will run hotter than before,a thin coat of Nic. will disapate heat faster than a cast iron sleeve,In most cases by the time u spend $$ on boring& sleeving u could get it replated, madmike

I understand that sleeving will run hotter due to the interface between the aluminum and iron. But cost wise, sleeving was a few hundred cheaper not counting the cost of shipping a V-8 block via frieght to Wisconson. I'm not racing it so I figure I can get by with sleeving. Besides, after two years of the Niksil, Jag switched to sleeves.
