View original topic: Looking After Polished Fuchs Alloys
VolksBugs Thu Mar 08, 2007 1:36 pm

I have some early Fuchs which have just been polished and detailed.

What is the best way to look after them? Will I have to send them off to the polishers again every few months?

Thanks in advance :-)

The best stuff I have used on my wheels is the new Mothers Billet polish. If you keep your car garaged and clean you will be able to keep them nice and not have to send them back.

The other alternative is to have them chromed, but that debate will open up a can of worms

I haven't used the Mothers polish so I can't speak for or against it. The stuff I use on my fuchs and any other aluminum for that matter is called "Boms Away" that's not a misspell. It is great! It will shine them up quickly and it lasts for a good while. You have to order it from their website. It's $20 a bottle and well worth it. the site is badtothebom.com.

I just polished mine up myself using Mother's and the round sponge ball that Maguires sells. The ball attaches to a drill. I took off 3 lugs nuts to get in and around them, reinstalled, and them pulled the other two to finish the job on each wheel. Took me about 2 hours to do all 4 wheels, lug nuts caps, etc. and they hadn't been touched since October. Beats the heck out of paying someone else to do it.

X2 on that one.

I had my Gas Burners polished (because you can't chrome magnesium) and had them powder coated clear afterwards. I just wipe them clean now.

A powder coater that doesn't know what they are doing will have that outcome.

Here's a polished 16x5 and an early 15x4.5.
Both polished and clear powder coated by Al Reed.

My Gas Burners (magnesium) and even harder to get a nice clear on will be here tonight.

I'll post those up tomorrow.

Is there some sort of protector for the black lug nuts to avoid scraping the black finish when removing and screwing them on?

Get a specialty socket.
I have one that I use for all my Porsche lugnuts. It's deep so it grabs at the base and it's plastic (for lack of a better word) on the inside to avoid scrathing them.

Take them back and have him redo them.
He's REAL big on customer service / satisfaction.

Take a regular socket that fits the alloy lug nuts, and take a plastic baggie or plastic wrap. Stuff part of the plastic inside the socket. Or put the plastic on the nut and cover it with the socket.Tighten or loosen the nut. Remove the plastic and stuff some area back in that was not used previously. Works great, no need to buy a new socket.
