I was just going to post pictures, but I thought first add up the miles.
529,523 or 629,523  Now I am wondering which it is.
Baby (that is what she was calling it) was built 8/1970. I will not know the official date until I get the Birth Certificate because all the papers were stolen. :( It has a sunroof, but with problems (broken cable(s) and caulked shut to stop leaks). So, here are the pictures. Enjoy. :D
Sorry about the depth of field, it was dark. |

R.Rabbit, thanks for the help.
Joe, that is the least of the worries. The front is even worse. When I get it home (if I get those parts :x ) I will post some pictures. The front was hit at some point. The apron suffered some, but the hood took it worse. It was replaced by someone who was a real dummy, he just bolted it on. It needs to be adjusted back about a half inch. Thus, the hood rusted from the inside out, with the seal drying even faster from the exposer.
Okay, you say that is no problem, but wait. I go to get insurance, and the guy there knows all most nothing. With the Fastback it was ten minutes, and I had collector's. This guy took about an hour. He would not put me under collector's, then he could not find my auto, had to have the odometer reading, and would not fully insure it until they had pictures of the car. So, I have to get all the body work done A.S.A.P. (they want only one set of photographs), and have little to do it with. Thus, I am trying to sell what I can.
Thanks for the kind remarks, and letting me get that off. I feel much better. :D |

luckily that front apron is easily repaired if you follow some of the threads in the body and paint. they use body hammers to bend the metal back out and pound it smooth. it should look pretty good until you eventually decide to replace the apron.
the insurance is a bummer. but they will see the light! just have patience.
btw, when is this picnic thing you were talking about? |

Joe, so the apron will have to be replaced? Would it be less money? I was going to call them on Monday.
I P.M.ed you with the information. |

JSMskater, who do you insure with? architect_7 have one of the idiots your dealing with call them. There is for sure an office between RB and El Cajon that will insure the car. Their just ignorant. get someone thats been around awile like Farmers or State Farm. I can see geico failing but not the others. You dont need classic insurance for that car. It will have limitations.
Hows the weather there? I miss San Diego  |

notchboy, it is 90 here. Just right for me (especially since I now am at 165). Why did you leave? Or not come back? Oh, I forgot about money.
Now that I am armed with 629,523 miles I am going to call A.A.A. Monday. I want Collector's because it is agreed value. They put me at value of $1,000 which even the N.A.D.A. does not agree with. Plus, as I work I want not to be ripped off. A.A.A.'s has little restrictions. See here, please: http://www.aaa-calif.com/INSURANCE/AUTO/COLLECTOR_CAR.ASPX

| Cheap, but what happens when you need them most. A.A.A. is a little more, with a lot more perks (towing, air, gas, D.M.V. ect.). I think that he was mistaken, because the trouble came with collateral, but he was able to give me hit and run. I do not mind the trouble because I want to be covered when a illegal B***er hits and runs or I get dinged by an inconsiderate person, who usually drives a "truck" (these are not stereotypical do to the over whelming majority). |

I have USAA. Its no more better or worse than any other of the big ones. I have all the roadside perks AAA has built into my policy.
An adjuster will curse the day I make a claim on my 63 notch back. School will definitely be in session as I show them the value of an early T3 that doesn't exist to their computer.
I would be more than happy to present testimonials from credible VW people in the know as well as comps from awesome informational sites as TheSamba.

I left San Diego for the X wife. Bad move. We were divorced in a year after relocating to Murrieta. Shit happens  |

USAA won't insure my VWs. They keep referring me to a classic company. |

notchboy, sorry to hear that. At least you got yourself and a hobby.
That is a good idea about being prepared. I would think some records would not show a Notchback, do to not being officially being imported. Is the N.A.D.A. a good start? I was told to half the figures but...there are none like mine that can prove that (according to N.A.D.A. mine would be about $5,000). Plus, seeing the $2,500 Squarebacks makes me think not. |

i insure with AAA for the same reasons Adriel mentioned, i actually had to use them last night to pick up my ghia... i threw a rod last night and blew up the motor. i get pretty good prices too, but im still coupled on my parents policy so that will change in 3 months... |

I get this feeling with USAA as well. I know what you mean Neil about the classic push. I went round with them(geico) on that as well. But my story went like this-
Had USAA for like 12 years-never did the "we dont insure below 1980" crap they do now. I had a fender bender in my 98 ford van and got F-ed out of $300 by USAA. I was pissed and went with Geico. They took my Van but not the notch. This went down shortly before I drove my 63 from Seattle to Texas this last time. So when I got to Seattle to do the drive I had cooled down over the $300 and as well didnt want Classic insurance nor did I feel like shoppin much. So I called USAA again for a quote. To my surprise they "relay" wanted me back and they were lower than Geico. So I went back. Kicker is they took the 63 as well and I assume it was because they insured it before since 01 and my lapse away from them was short-4 months.
So I am lucky to be in that grey zone because when and if I do have a claim on my 63 they WILL be in the dark and not have a clue as to what to pay out. Ill be giving the adjuster all the leads and information. Plus Ill be able to sell myself some of the parts needed to fix it
I wrecked my 68 fasty out of high school. My friend owned a VW shop and he did essentially what I can do now on my own in way of educating the adjusted on the rare "expensive" gems we drive  and charge accordingly. |

| Well, I made a mistake. :? :( I misread the log book (broken speedometer cable), and on top of that mistake an engine rebuilt as a turn over. When one makes a mistake, I think that it should be corrected. So, here I am, with the mileage being [Drum Roll] 329,523. Now that is more believable. So, the first engine lasted a measly 55,000! Now I am wondering what the first owner did in that 20,000 miles! |

What fender do you have? Was it like this Ford Fender? Do you think this cost much? I’m having a hard time searching which is preferable. Do you have any recommendation? Thanks!!! |

Probably ran Quaker State Motor Oil aka "Quaker Sludge". At the dealer, we could always tell when an engine was run with QS- they were the most gummed up inside, and were usually in for overhaul the fastest. |

| Well, got the fuse box all wired up. Everything seems to work, for the exception of the turn signals (incorrect relay, so I pulled it out, plus the lever does not work). I hate to say it, but people stare as if they do not know that I am signaling. I digress, took it out for a run, seemed like the deceleration surging is better, but not to my liking. It should be real smooth, right? The warm up seems better, but it has gotten a little warmer (above 80 degrees F.). I am thinking the next project is the vacuum lines. I used electrical tape to fix the cracks, and I just do not think that is right. Plus, they are hard as year old fries (long story, do not ask). I tried to measure them, but am having trouble. It would be a lot easier to know what they are. I see two or three sizes, what are they? I have braided hoses, that was the original style, right? |

| Take the hoses you need with you to the parts store. They should be able to match it up. It does not have to be braided hose. |
