This may sound dumb but the weather finally got nice so I took my 87 Jette GLI 16 Valve, to the car wash and washed it down including underneath the fenders. The funny part is when I was done washing my vehicle the car would not start. My question is is there a fuse that could have gotten wet when I hosed under the fenders and made the fuel pump not run, or did the fuel pump just dedice to quit working at that very moment. The car does crank but it will not fire up. Please Help as I know my Beetles 100% but my Jetta knowledge stinks !!! THANKS THEBUGSMY59 :lol: :D :D

well check for spark, if you have spark, you might have just sprayed water in the intake, just get a can of starting fluid from the grocery store and see if she'll start and burn out the water, or even try tow-starting it pop the clutch in 3rd gear. other than that try vwvortex.com they are pretty helpful over there.

If you sprayed heavily under the area around the fuel pump it's possible it shorted the fuse due to water on the power/ground leads. I've done that once...or twice. Check the fuse for the fuel pump.

Our Golf used to die when it went through puddles. It would suck water up in the air box. To get it going I would pull the air filter and dry what I could. Then a pop start later I was running. Never did find a cure.

I have a friend with a 1996 Jetta with a 2.0 16valve. Doing the same exact thing. Dry=fine wet=stop. did you guys ever figure this one out? would your 87 be similar to the 96? water in the intake? fuel pump? fuse? Thanks.

Most likely the coil pack or the cars computer brain got soaked. Computer is located on the cowl at the base of the windshield. Coil pack is located nearby. Mine 96 did this all the time. Replaced the brain at least twice. Finally got so tired of it I got rid of the car.
