| Maybe if your going quicker than 10.49 secs in the 1/4 mile, then a roll cage isnt necessary. |

It definitely wouldn't hurt. It could make the difference between life and death in a crash. I've thought about putting one in mine.
I knew someone who had a Crown Vic as a company vehicle. He got hit by a tractor trailer and walked away from the wreck because of the factory integrated roll cage (because of police requirements, all Crown Vics have built in roll cages). |

| I agree with CarreraRS2.7,you don't have to be fast to benefit from a roll cage...I say go for it, and now you got me thinking of getting one in the super  |

| The only real downside is that your back seat will become completely unusable. Unfortunately that's my dog's favorite seat in her favorite car. They do make NHRA & SCCA approved bolt on roll cages which allow you to remove them & reinstall them as needed. |

If you want a roll cage for a basic street Bug then just buy a Chenowth class 11 roll cage. Most Baja and off road VW suppliers sell them. they are cheap and easy to install. they are made of 1 1/2" X .095 mild steel tubing.
If you are going to drag race you need to check the NHRA rule book to see what is required for the speeds you plan on running. A roll bar made of 1 3/4" X .118" tubing is required for any car running 11.49 or quicker in the 1/4 mile. A full cage is required at 10.49. |

I don't know about for street use. I had a friend in HS who had a baja and it had a roll cage, he was rear ended, not even all that much of a collision, but his head hit the padded roll bar,a nd he was in a coma, and took him years to recover and was never quite the same.
I have been looking at roll bars, but I keep thinking without a helmet, it may do more harm than good. I ve been thinking of reinforcing the pan and have a cage that would not have the roll bar going so high, and instead wrap more around the back of the front seats and with the side bars. Just something to give you more side impact prtoection and rigidity.
Has anyone done that? or??? |
