On, my dual carb 1600cc. latley ive noticed a hissing, or a sucking sound by my drivers side carb/manifold/spark plug, not sure where exactly. Well today I went to a vw shop, and they told me that i should have my valves ajusted. But my car is also missing. would my vavles have to do with that.
Does anyone else no why my bug would be making this noise.
My car is craping out on me. I dont know why. My clutch is spent, now i have a valve problem or something, and a few other things. Typical volkswagen.
thaks for any and all help.

Out of adjustment valves can cause misfiring and poor running. It sounds, though to me, as if you have a vacuum leak. Check to make sure the manifold/carb gaskets are in good shape and that the manifold/carb bolts are tight. Sounds as if one of them came loose. I would adjust the valves myself if I were you. It's easy and you will do a better job than a shop would.

I agree with aircooled_mechanic. For the most part, the VW beetle is one of the easiest vehicles to work on. Get a repair manual and try the repairs yourself. I think you will be suprised at how well you will do.

Spray some brake cleaner around the area that you believe the hissing noise is coming from,if the idle changes you have found a vacuum leak.

Did your engine stop missing after you adjusted your valves?
