Try this simple checkup process - it will tell you if the generator, regulator or battery is faulty and also describes "polarising" a generator which has been sitting around and lost it's magnetism.

If you have a 73 superbeetle, you should have an alternator...unless you are in another country??

try polerizing it first, just power it off the battery like a electric motor positive to the large terminal and negitive to the ground and to the body of the gen.
