For a good quality motor, you will be looking at anywhere from 850 to 1100 dollars.

What about one that was pulled from a car a few years ago for a clutch but never put back in. The still ran good when he pulled it, just needed to replace the clutch. He never got around to it though, didn't really need the car and ended up getting ride of it and keeping the motor. He was asking $700 but I didn't know if that was a good deal or not. Thanks

It would depend on how many miles were on it. Is it a complete "turnkey" set up?

What do you mean by "turnkey". It is a complete motor. He said the only thing wrong was that it needed a new clutch. I think it was around 40,000 miles on the motor when he pulled it. It has been sitting in a garage for quite a few years. And thanks again for the help.

"turnkey" means it has the alternator, cooling fan, engine tin, carb, etc. All you have to do is install it and "turn the key" so to speak..."

If the engine was stored in a nice dry place it might still be in good condition, but if exposed it may have the sump contaminated by dust/moisture, the carby linkage frozen and so on - only you can work that one out.

If he's trying to get rid of it, he might take a lower offer ($400 or whatever you think) - it depends on how much he wants to get rid of it and how much you want it.

If you do get it, I'd replace the main seal and O ring (behind the flywheel) before I put it in any car (just because it's harder to do later) and change the oil before you start is. I'd change the oil again after about a hundred miles, just so any crud gets flushed out completely.

If it's a generator model (72s were originally generator), it may have lost all it's residual magnetism and will probably need polarising before it will start to generate power - there's a procedure (not hard) on my web site for that.
