i have a 72 super beetle and i cant seem to get the back up lights to work. Does the ground strap on the transmission play a role in all of this, because the one on mine looks pretty old. Also there are two wires running out of the front of the trans and i think that they conect to the back up lights. Do they go inside the transmission and if so how can you tell if there working. thank you.

The two wires go on a switch on the side of the transaxle near the rear mount. One of them goes to the fuse in the engine compartment by the fanshroud and the other goes to the back up lights. Heres a site with a wiring diagram for your car, just scroll down. http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/index.html

I have never seen one bad,but yes it could. To check it, make sure the positive is hot at the switch with a test light. With the transaxle in nuetral, key on (don't start it and work under it) the light will only come on at one of the switch terminals. Then put it in reverse and the light should come on at both of the switch terminals if it is good. If it's bad only one terminal at the switch will be hot in Reverse. If yours is bad let me know,I have a few and will give you one. Good luck. Tim.
