I am thinking about buying a 1999 new beetle, and I have searched the forums for issues. I have noticed the general disgust with a few items (window switches, headlights, etc.) but to me most either love 'em or hate 'em so I figure that there are lemons in every car line.....
Anyway...
The one I am looking at has a slight groan when coasting down. It is the 2.0 gas with an auto. 94,000 miles. The groan stops aound 5 mph, and you cannot hear it when accelerating. I am wondering if it is a normal sort of noise, or a run-away sort of noise, like the tranny's about to go. I figure it could be the converter just slowing things down. Any guesses?
And is there anyting in particular that I should look for that should kill the sale? |

yeah just call VW customer care 1800 822 8987
and just give them the VIN. Then you can ask is all of the recalls have been done or not.
Also, I wouldn't recommend the 2.0 "crossflow" engine, They seem to have electrical issues and are slow and boring.
Certain years had the ignition coils recalled. I would get all of the service record on the car as well. They should have paperwork for big services, like the timing belt, waterpump, and the various filters etc. If they don't have it and it doesn't check out, you are just buying somebody else's problems. |
