This guy can't be serious.

John, I am 53 and been involved with VW's since the late sixties when I was able to buy a running bug or bus for $200.00 or less so I am always saying "He can't be serious" when I see stuff for sale online & off. But as they say "rarity dictates value". I prefer "A fool and his money are soon departed".

Bill

Ragged out split with red velour interior, trashed hood and 40 horse for $15.5k?? And some idiot will probably buy it....

what would you say is a good price for it? $8000?
I'm just curious. Its in better shape than my zwitter but my zwitter has more correct parts but its also a zwitter...

$17,500 seems a bit much considering the rockers and possibly more are rusted out.

Is it my imagination or do all VW's end up in a barn?

Here we go again... Been looking at Splits and Oval Rags and the prices are all over the place! What would you guys pay for this car?

Wiggy Sat Aug 30, 2008 7:18 pm

I think its a very fair price if it really is an original ragtop.

I'm going to be putting my hoffman rag split soon, and it wont be that cheap.

twinwindows Sat Aug 30, 2008 7:21 pm

I agree with Kev, Thats a good price for that car.

I don't think that paint is 20 years old. My buddy Bill Hall from Monterey painted that car in the mid-90'ies. Not the best job, but it looks good going down the road.

If this was the car recently for sale in nor cal, then that price is about twice what it should be. That car is a mess!

johnshenry Sat Aug 30, 2008 8:32 pm

What was wrong with it??

It's been in Portland for 8-10 years I'd guess, I'm not sure if that's what you mean by recently.

Ok I am not going to post the ad or attack the individual. I just need to vent about rust definitions while doing my best Lewis Black imitation. Rust, that orange crusty stuff. "Rust free" this does not mean the rust on your car comes free, it means there is NO rust. "Surface rust" means just that, surface discolration easily sanded or prepped for primer and painting "Some rust" means pitting, minor surface prep. "Rusty" means a lot of pitting to almost rotted through, requiring major surface prep, media blasting , etc.. "Rusty", "Some rust" or "The only rust I can find" does NOT include HOLES!! I love when I read "The only rust I can see is in the ___ area" but when you look there is a hole where the #@%!!@ "____ area" was!!! (breathe in , breathe out...pheww) Ok I feel better, this is cheaper than therapy! Next time I will ask for more pictures before driving a couple hundred miles to look at a car.

That is fine Bill, glad you got that out, and I think that will do it for today's session. See you next Monday an we'll talk about "NOS", OK?

And this car was up for sale in Seattle for a while and was asking $10k without any takers. It was sold to someone else, and he didn't want it and advertised it at an asking price of $5800. There were not really any parts that came with it, and it's not an original rag. Now asking $12k? I'm all for finding a deal and making a profit, but....

Wiggy Mon Sep 01, 2008 1:20 pm

Yeah, somebody needs to lay down the pipe on that one.

bwaz Mon Sep 01, 2008 5:42 pm

It's even the same pics as in the previous ad
