View original topic: NOISY electric fuel pump

When my baja sits for quite a while (>1 week) it often takes some time to start. I figured the float bowls were either draining, or it was just a cold engine...

So when my mechanical fuel pump failed, I thought it'd be a great idea to get an electric one...

Was I ever wrong! I just spent and hour and a half removing the old pump, removing the cam, installing the blockoff, mounting the fuel pump, routing the hoses, & wiring the new pump.

Thinking i was being smart, I mounted the pump to the firewall, where it would be out of the path of flying debris.

The damn thing sounds like somebody tapping on the firewall with a hammer! I can clearly hear it over the engine at idle. :x

Would re-mounting it somewhere OFF the body help that much? Is there a better way to quiet this thing down, or do I toss it and go buy a $16 mechanical pump?

Is it a regular old Facet? Normally they quiet down a lot once they get to pressure. I've had them mounted on the firewall before. I know they make those little rubber isolaters but I never trusted them off-road.

Wrap it in some Rubber Radiator hose and a semi/non solid mount.

This is the rounded facet pump sold by EMPI. (at least I think it's a facet)

It is very loud when dry, but immediately quited down SOME. I'll probably do the soft mount trick...

Thanks!

Soft mount it as well as electric pumps are much better and pushing than pulling. So you might want to try mounting is close the the tank. Maybe secure it to the frame head area some how. This will also get it off the fire wall which is probably acting as a speaker.

That style of pump works best mounted BELOW the level of the tank. And yes, it should be soft mounted. If you have it clamped to a craddle style bracket(s), wrap it in some rubber or inner tube material. Or, you can use rubber grommets around the bolts to space it off the firewall. It should be lower than the tank though...

The good news is that my tank is behind the rear seat, and the pump is mounted near the bottom of the tank. The firewall mount is turning the whole car into a sound-box (like an acoustic guitar).

I'll move it off to the side, a little lower, but still on the body (I want to avoid a rock hitting it.)

It'll be about 1 foot away from the tank pickup, and maybe 2-3 inches below the tank.

I figure the best way to quiet it down is to bolt it to a 2" rubber hose (only through 1 wall) and then bolt the rubber hose down to the car. That'll give it some flexibility, but also stop transmitting so much noise.

Thanks!

I'm sure it will be much quieter that way... let us know how it turns out.
