I want to install an oil pump that accepts a paper filter and I'm wondering if I need to make any modifications to the case first. I've heard of a "full-flow" pump and I'm not sure what that means. Can anyone help me out?

There is a "heavy duty" oil pump that comes with a filter. They are relatively inexpensive and bolt right on. Unless you have a header exhaust system, I would not recommend them though. As they will not work with the stock exhaust system (not enough clearance between the pump and the muffler). But if you change to a header system, you will have to put a bigger main jet in your carb. It can really be more of a hassle than it's worth. While not the best, the stock screen does an adequate job as long as you change the oil every 3 months or 3000 miles. More frequently if you drive on dirt roads or live in a hot climate.

I've heard of an OEM pump/filter that goes on all new Mexican Beetles. It uses a regular screw on filter canister. I've looked at my engine and it seems like there's enough space for it to fit between the engine and the muffler. Sorry I don't have a link to show exactly what I mean, but has anyone used one of these? Do they require any case modifications?

I had one on my 73 Super. No case modifications needed. It just replaced the stock oil pump. But there was not enough clearance between the filter and the muffler. The filter can help dissipate some of the heat from the oil, however if it is touching, or almost touching the muffler, it will actually absorb heat from the muffler and heat your oil up a few degrees. Not exactly the desired effect.

I have a 73 Super and had one installed on it.
I was given the advise to remove it and install a remote or a filter sump, I opted for the sump(Empi puts out a nice small one).
The reason is that the filter gets alot of heat being in the back of the engine where most of the heat is expelled from the cooling tin and no so much the muffler unless your standing in traffic alot.here's a great plce for info - http://www.geneberg.com/techtips.htm. Hope this helps :) |
