View original topic: How low in rear?

I am lowering the front of my '73 4 inches, how many splines should I gow down in the rear to keep it even?

Each one-down-one-up rotation of the inner and outer splines result in a ride height change of about 1/2-3/4" (each double rotation produces and engle change in the spring plate of 0 degrees 50 minutes (about 0.9 degrees), so for 4 inches, you'd need about 5-6 "double rotations".

The stock ride height for all bugs is 150mm (about 6 inches) so you are going to bottom out on every driveway and spon drain, but I guess that's your choice.

Sorry about the typos - "engle change" should read "angle change" - it's 1am here in Aus - time I got some sleep.

Don't forget that you'll have a camber change too when dropping the rear suspension. With the swing axle bug ANY dropping of the rear will result in negative camber which will result in the wheel bearings getting little or no lubrication - they rely on the slight positive camber to hold a small pool of gearbox oil behind the bearings.

On the IRS suspension a small change in height makes little difference to the camber, but larger lowering does result in some negative camber. Not a problem for lubrication (the bearings on IRS bugs are greased, not oiled from the gearbox), but the handling will change.
