I have a 71 super convertible. A few months ago I turned the engine off, heard a noise from the rear seat area and saw that both the generator and oil light were on even though the key was removed. This continued to happen whenever I turned the moro off and removed the key. I was able to jiggle the key ou without the ignition switch settleing into its final position - at least the lights didn't come on. I replaced the electrical portion of the ignition switch - same thing. Turned the engine off and the generator and oil lights came on. Thought is was a voltage regulator problem - put in a new voltage regulator - same problem. I also checked all the fuses and redid the electrical connections from the generator back. Still the same probelm.
Anybody out there have any idea what is going on - its driving me batty. Thanks for any advice! |

| Could the problem be with the FI control module that's located on the right side of the car on the side wall behind the back seat (at least that's where mine is)? The Muir and Bentley books both have instructions on how to check that unit. |

| 71 supers don't have FI control modules. As for the problem, I'm guessing electrical gremlins. Call a witch doctor. |

| Try replacing the ignition lock itself. Sometimes the little tab that goes into the electrical part of the switch gets worn and causes problems just like a bad electrical part of the switch. I've seen this more than once. If it was a volt reg. problem it would ONLY affect the gen light, not the oil lamp, too. I think the lock tumbler mechanism isn't allowing the electrical part of the switch to turn off all the way. |

Voltage regulator is my guess. It's under the rear seat, and if it's sticking, it will intermittently stay "shut" thus keeping current active even though you've shut off the car. If that is the case, it's only a matter of time until you'll be replacing it anyway.
