71 single cab

GEX built mystery hyro 1600 T1 (don't laugh. it was in my westy and has yet to let me down. yes, i did just knock on wood)

250 miles this weekend, 65-68 crusing with canvas/hoops and a roof rack, my fat ass, box-o-tools cooler and coleman fold-n-go chair 21.9 mpg

On a trip from Massachusetts to Tennessee to S Carolina, to N Carolina to Massachusetts in a loaded bus, driving faster than I should (65+) sporting eventually a mangled exhaust, an even more eventually a cracked case... I averaged 17.07 mpg.

My best was 20.02mpg (flat eastern MA/ cape cod) , and my worst was 15.14mpg (City driving in Charleston, SC)

This is a 78 transporter turned camper w/ a 50hp 1600dp conversion.

I think when my bus is not loaded with stuff and my exhaust is providing some sort of back pressure, I can keep it pretty consistent @ about 19mpg depending where I am at.

just got back from my first long drive in a while.
went from San Luis Obispo to South Pasadena and back.
430 miles of highway driving (70% at 75 mph, 30% in 10mph stop and go  ) and about 20 miles of city driving.
total mpg was about 18.5, not bad concidering the carbs are way out of sync.

Just had first > 100 mile trip with my newly rebuilt engine, and I got 23 MPG on mainly motorway driving. About 55 - 60 all the way with a bit of traffic light action for 10 miles at the beginning. Quite pleased with that!

I'm going to fill up again later today so I'll be able to confirm or otherwise that figure.

Oh, it's a 1979 2.0L FI Westy. Not loaded for this trip but 2 adults, 1 child and some bags.

1970 Westy Pop Top
1641 Single Port, Engle 100 Cam
40/40 psi

Trip to BBB at Lake Havasu last weekend, 409 miles
Travelled fully loaded with camping gear, water tank full, etc.
Drove 95% highway, mostly 60-65
Tons of head wind on about 60 miles of the drive
Got 22.5 MPG
Got 21.5 MPG back in May last year when the engine was just breaking in.

Getting better!

I just did my first fill up and got 11.8 after adding a 4% tire correction. This is on a newly re-bulit engine with only 150 miles on it and 50% of the driving was in the city. I have a 1973 1.7 with dual Empi's and std tranny.

skudkino Fri Feb 03, 2012 10:21 pm

I got 20 mpg on my first fill up in my new bus!

78 Westy FI
195 tires
half city/half highway

and im now finding vacuum leaks every where

And I should mention, it is empty. just the back seat, back cabnits, front seat and me. No sink and all that... And never going over 65 mph.

Do the fuel injected buses get that much better mileage than single or dual carbs? I find it hard to believe that you can get twice the fuel economy with fuel injection. I'm starting to think that I should sell my new Empi dual setup and convert to fuel injection. Anyone have any comment about this idea.

Are your Empi carbs Kadrons? Your accelerator pump squirters may be siphoning. If they sit too low, the ends of them are in a high vacuum area and they will spray even at a steady throttle setting. The fix is to bend them (GENTLY!!!) so their ends are higher, like so:

Credit where credit's due, I believe it was 57Baja who pointed this out to me. I'd been putting smaller and smaller main jets in, and still was getting 13 mpg. I moved the squirters, and the thing would barely run on the main jet. I returned to the original main jet and got 15 mpg, driving it like I stole it. I'm happy with the 15 mpg in the Westy considering how much faster and heavier, and with the poptop, how much more air it has to push outta the way as compared to the 18 mpg I get in the Kombi.

With FI and a lot of knowledge and patience, you might be able to set it up to run leaner at low load than you can get with carbs. If you spend a lot of time at part throttle, the fuel economy can be impressive.

I have Solex. They look a little different but I decided to bend my squirters up anyway. What harm can it do. My carb adjustments are both set at 1/2 turn out and I don't seem to be too lean. It runs good. We'll have to see how this works. I'll repost after I take a trip in a week or so.
Thanks for the info.

Just curious - someone mentioned they got better MPG because they are lowered - can anyone post up real data - i.e. MPG before lowering and MPG after lowering??

ortak Fri Feb 24, 2012 5:04 pm

It seems that the previous 4% mileage correction was not correct after doing a mileage check on the road. My odometer is 16% to 17% under actual. I'll be using 16% from now to correct my fuel economy. My previous stated fuel economy is actually 13.035 with about 50% city driving. I just did another check after moving the accelerator pump squirters up. I just drove 178 miles and got 15.08 MPG. Again it was 50% city driving but the other 50% was in 20 mph plus windy conditions on the highway today. I guess I can't complain anymore. I still have a hard time believing that the odometer is that far off but I double checked it at different mileage points

Just took a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway. On the way up we got 17.7 mpg and the return trip was 19.7 mpg. Running dual EMPI's. Had plenty of power going up most of the hills had to use 3rd gear a bunch. Mt Mitchell found me using 2nd and 3rd gear. Quite the climb. I'm monitoring number 3 cylinder temperature and it got up to 475 degs f on the climb. Most of the trip I was running 350 to 400 degs f.

I also verified that my odometer was 19.74% off per the mile post markers and my Garmin.

78 westy new 2.0 F.I. engine with roughly 500 miles on it now averaged 16.75 in town and a little highway driving. Not bad for not broken it yet, it can only get better.
