Anyone just cut their front springs instead of forking out dollars for new, lower ones? Opinions on whether this would be a bad idea?

bad bad, very bad. IMHO anyway... spend the bucks on topline struts. frontend/ride is a SAFETY issue... don't sqrimp out on SAFETY ITEMS

I had a super, I just went to the muffler shop and told them to heat up my springs,. My super was about 3 inches off the ground,.Never had a problem and the cost was only $20.

there are lots of down and dirty way's to lower cars but I personally do not approve of them, heating the springs with a torch till they "collapse" changes the strength of the metal, it weakens it!
It's the equivalent of the old school regular bug trick of "pullin leaves ( torsion spring leafs) NO ONE does that shit any more!
I am just trying to point out that the safest way is the right way, with parts that are designed and engineered and tested ( you know, R and D) to work within the constraints of the design geometry of the application not backyard modified BS. properly made dropped spindles and the topline strut kit are the way to go.
Due to the strut design, Supers are also more critical when it comes to lowering, than regular bugs
( welding in adjusters etc.) you really need to get the right parts where as regular bug beams can be modified easily. |

When I first got my 72 Super it had the typical nose-high stance. It needed front shocks, so while it was apart I cut one turn off the springs. My intent was to make the car level, not lowered. The result was exactly what I wanted. That was 10 years ago. There were absolutely no ill effects from this mod. However, if you get greedy and want a 3-4-5" drop, this is not the method.
