View original topic: Alternator Pulley removal

The front alternator pulley (the pulley closest to the alternator)
is partially broken and dragging against the alternator. Obviously
I need to replace the pulley, especially since it's been 105 around
here. I've taken both alternator pulley's off before, but cannot
remember how to remove the front pulley, which is held in place by a
woodruff key. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

75 Super, the woodruff key just keeps the pulley from spinning on the shaft, it has nothing to do with keeping the pulley attached. More than likely, the old pulley is just stuck to the shaft. Get a cheap 3 prong puller and have a go at it. When you're putting the new one on, clean the alt shaft (sandpaper/file) and test fit the new pulley until it's a nice snug fit, by hand. Add some anti-sieze to the shaft and wooduff key and fit new pulley. It should go on with minimal effort, not banging on the pulley with a sledge. It may take a while, This way, if you ever need to replace your alt, your old pulley will come off with less effort.

Thank you Clay. I'll give it a whirl!

Thanks again,
