Is there a safe way to run a motor without installing it in a vehicle (like a bug or bus)? I want to work on it separately, but my shop is (inconveniently) a few miles from where I am storing the bug. Any ideas? Has anyone built a mount on a stand or something similar before?

people commonly use a trans axle bell housing so that they can just bolt up a starter to it

i used a bellhouseing off a 002 transaxle (late model bus). since it bolts on, i bolted it to a plate and used some square tubing to make a stand. or check out aircooled.net, they sell a kit to bolt up a starter and run it on the ground

Not bad guys, I didn't think of just using a bell-housing. Looks pretty simple, I could probably put one of those together. Any other suggestions or tips? Is that one in the picture sturdy Tripicana?

the stand i built is pretty sturdy. i haven't actualy ran the motor on it yet, i just used it to work on my engine. i kinda wished i made the base a little wider. its just wide enough to run a jack underneath it. but it doesn't want to rock back and forth so i tihnk it would be alright to actualy run the motor on. i had it strapped to a pallet so i could move it around the hangar with a forklift, it didn't budge.
