I'm sure Brian worked on more than just your car, and I know we re-timed a couple of them while we were there.
Just a little update on the FYIs, I've rough counted 11 Fastbacks, but haven't broken it down completely. I've got a CD of pics (rob took with his camera phone, they came out pretty damn good) I need to send to John J. to post, and still have 7 rolls of film I need to scan. Once I get them scanned, I can send them to John too (on CD). I must have spent an hour just looking at pics today, and still need to go thru more. |

What he said! Even tho I drove my car onto the grounds, but had to tow it out (and let's not mention the sand trap! ) it was AWESOME!, again.
I got to meet some more of my T3 heros, and put faces to names. It was like meeting old friends for the first time.
T3 folks ARE THE BEST!
And due to accidents & construction, my just under 5 hour drive TO the Invasion, took 9 hours FROM the Invasion! |

Oops, Tom, you lettin' the cat out of the bag?! We didn't tell anyone, and if there's no pictures, It didn't Happen!
The Heydt Clan and Rob's girlfriend, Amanda all had a GREAT time as well!
It was good seeing you out and about again Tom, glad you and Keenan made it home safely! |

You didn't let Keenan drive did you? (jk)
I know what you're talking about though, as we ran a different route home (trying to avoid a big construction zone in Detroit that was listed in the newspaper) only to run into construction twice. Got home and Rob said there wasn't any construction except near our house where they've got the east bound lanes tore up for rebuilding. D'oh. Our alternate route added 50 miles, and an hour to our ride. Glad I wasn't in a hurry to get somewhere. |

Yup. One of the local Type 3/VW nuts, Jonce Fancher and his wife Dixie, let us "invade" their deck and backyard for the BBQ. We ended up with 11 Type 3s and about 26-28 people. I lost count. BBQ was a good time.
So was the whole Invasion.
2 more years or so til the next one!!!! |

If you go for Colorado, I can help. I propose Leadvile, the highest city in America. It wouldn't be an Invasion for the weak.
I have vowed to have my car driving by the end of August thanks to this weekend. |

wow -- what a trip....
about 1800 miles round trip and no regrets at all... it was great to meet fellow Type 3 nuts, see the cars and bring home some sweet swag...
I've posted pics in my gallery of some of the cars...
I will be attending the next in 2010 for sure....
and a big thanks to:
John Jaranson for ram-rodding the event and making everyone feel welcome, whether they had their Type 3 there or not...
Russ Wolfe and his wife for their hospitality and letting us crash at their house the first night of the road trip...
EdW for allowing us to crash at his place the next night and on Sunday as well... |

FANTASTIC
This was probably the best VW event I have ever attended in over 20 years of shows. I am a big proponent of rebuilding/refurbishing parts, and Jim's lecture on brake systems struck a chord with me. From now on I will make more of an effort to recondition old master cylinders, wheel cylinders, and especially calipers. I also got a lot out of Keith's beam tech session.
Six years ago, I sold three ratty old Type 34's to Lance and Marty and we lost contact. They decided to attend the Invasion at the last moment and brought their creation, Karmageddon, to the show. Both they and I were ecstatic at the chance encounter and we had a great time catching up with each other.
A special thanks for John and Jill for organizing a fantastic show site, beautiful weather (81º with low humidity and cloudy skies), and for John's talent and time to add some custom striping to my son's skateboard. I have been on a quest for a Squareback for the past few months and have a couple of good candidates lined up. I will definitely be able to have one in attendance for 2010. I am working as quickly as possible to get my many photos posted up in the Samba galleries.
The best statement the whole weekend came from vwfye:
"ATTENTION...Is there anyone here who actually drove or flew in from California?"
<silence>
"Right. I thought so. Carry on." |
