Hi guys, Just wondering two things actually.

First: Anyone have to sell or know where I can find a thin 32MM or 27MM wrench. VW part numbers: VW113 and VW113A. I was doing the wheel bearings on the bus. Wanted to try to do it right.

Unforunately, here at the dealership those type of tools walked away years ago. I was lucky to find the adapter so I could spin balance the wheels. =)

Second: Has anyone tried to use the lock nut found on the later Bay window buses on the split bus spindle? Just wondering. Thanks.

Search the Bug/T3 forums for a link to those clamp nuts. I imagine one of them will also fit a Bus.

A pair is one bent and one straight

I was unable to find them new. They seem to be no longer available. I asked several manufacturers looking to buy new ones. I ended up finding some used ones through thesamba classifieds or ebay or something. try a wanted ad. There are a bunch of pics in the gallery.

I had previously used an adjustable wrench on the outer nut, and a regular wrench I ground thinner on the inner.

The bay windows lock nuts work on one ton spindles.

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of getting a couple of cheap craftsman wrenches and grinding them down. Snap-on has a 'Thin' line of wrenches that are 6MM thick. But at over 40 dollars per wrench, I'll grind down some craftsmans.

The lock nut will fit the one ton spindles, cool.

I bought a set of these from Amazon. Not bad quality.

go to your local bike shop and ask them for a headset wrench. I was pleasantly surprised when doing my front wheel bears that I had the correct size in my bike tool box. My only complaint was that they are almost too thin, like about 1/8 inch. But they got the job done and are not expensive.

Maybe Harbor Freight has something?

I shopped there the other day and got a floor jack, metric tap and die set, and some heat shrink tubing for $39.99.

God bless Harbor Freight.

Yeah, Harborfreight has what you need. They sell an entire set of cheap wrenches for like $19.99. Comes with like 7-32 so you get the big 30 as well for the crank pulley. You can't hurt those big cheap wrenches 8)

I have found some at all car swap meets. Next I would try Zelenda.

That must be right coast swap meets because I've never seen them out here.

You could also try Baum Tools <--try an internet search for them, they still carry Hazet, Stahwille, USAG, ect tools for German cars. Got mine there....geez it's been 18 years ago now.

Clara Mon May 21, 2007 7:40 am

I believe I paid ~ $40 or $50 a pair for used Mac axle nut wrenches,
$27 for one Hazet 27mm wrench.
An NOS Hazet pair cost more than $80.

Tools are great. You just gotta decide what your weekly/monthly tool budget is, cause things can get pretty out of hand. Some of the expensive tools I bought I really enjoy the quality of. Some thing I don't think the pricier ones are all that much better than the cheap ones.

use fat chick bus clamp nuts and save money on not buying thin wrenches.

they don't work on early spindles.

Clara, the tools were on the top of my "must find" list at the Spring Meet. None to be found anywhere. Maybe the Woodburn show.

Rick is right: buy a thin metric open end wrench at a bicycle store. I used to build bicycles and I have a lot of bike tools, and found a Campagnolo wrench that works perfectly. Get a cheaper brand, though, or you will pay up your ass.

I get the connection...you must have been a biker in a prior life. I use to do the Wildflower every year when I lived in Sac.

Campy was my favorite. I still have 3 bikes with Record gear one them. does Park make a 27mm wrench?

Campy Tue May 22, 2007 10:29 pm

They just had the Wildflower a while ago.
I looked in my tool drawer and I had PARK thin wrenches in sizes 33mm and 34mm, 35mm and 36mm, and 13mm and 14mm. You should be able to get a 27mm one, no problem.
