View original topic: A few El Lobo questions...

Brought home this buggy recently and had a few questions.
(El Lobo, or clone of one, I suppose.)

Fresh from the field:

As it looks now, after some wetsanding, rattlecan clear, and some rattlecan graphics to cover some poor primer repairs from the previous owner:

It is titled as a 70 model, and has a ball joint front end, an IRS rear end, and a 1600 dp with a substantial oil leak.

Drums and wheels are wide 5 pattern???
Shouldn't it be 4 lug? What was most likely done to make it 5 lug?

I am contemplating a disc brake conversion, but still may opt to rebuild the brakes as they are now... Whatever that may be...

Nice find!! It looks like they chopped the windshield and lowered the roll bar to match. It has a nice stance. It definitely should have had 4-lug drums on it, but someone probably just changed them out for the look.

I like the asymmetrical flame job.

It could be an Odd-VW-Ark designed by Automotive Design. Here's a link
to a scan of their brochure.

Thanks. The flames were simply designed to cover old damaged areas. The wife liked the color, so I tried to preserve as much of the original as possible...

Do five lug drums simply fit over the '70 model hardware and backing plates? Were other changes required to convert this to five lug?

It could have a 66 or 67 front beam on it. Those years were ball joint and wide 5 lug.
The rear could have a hardened spacer on the outside of the drum to run a 5 lug drum on an irs rear.

I agree with Surviver. The asymetrical flames look great.
I also like that you put the headlights back up where they
should be.

I seams like I always end up with wheel adapters for Chevy etc. so I have more choices in wheels...

hey azonie tub
where do you find the chevy conversions

Jimmler Sun Jul 08, 2007 9:33 pm

CIP has the adapters:

If I was gonna go that route, tho, I'd probably buy blank rotors/drums and have them drilled/tapped for the Chevy bolt pattern. Good luck! The "Truggie" looks like an interesting project.

Hey Aquavette
I really like the blue outline. It really
makes the flames jump out. Awsome job!!
