The last load was 2,080. I had the 71 Super packed full of piston rods, gears from torn down autostick transmissions, cranks, misc fasteners (including a fuel tank full of bolts, screws & nails), and a bunch of fence posts. A rear clip from a 1973 Ghia, a partial Ghia rear clip, and part of an IRS rear frame were all in the mix. |

'73 Standard owned by some delusional redneck. It's been parked since 1990.
I asked if it was for sale and he said "Yeah, but I hope you don't think it's a $500 car, it's worth more than that!"
Needs pans, heater channels, and the engine is seized. He wants 2 grand. I offered $200. I think he'll have it for a while. |

Yes it WOULD be a great story.
Buy.... it..... Eh... Sort of.
Its complicated, and that poor ole 64 is toast.
Ive crushed better ones.
Really only could save a few pieces.
It would be nice to have a door hanging on my wall though!
Ive learned my lesson on buying cars for senti-MENTAL reasons.
You pay too much, and get very little. |

Let me splain it out
Complicated sale.... Well....Complicated purchase.
BUY 0 or ALL his side yard VW's. He is keeping some.
85% Super Fat Chicks, a Couple of Bay Buses, a couple of non "Super" post 67 Beetles and one busted up 64..... at $300 a pop only if you take them all. NONE WITH TITLES. Thats my biggest problem, no papers..... Hard to overcome that in North Carolina. The fat chicks hurt the purchase. Some are complete, some are not. Typical East Coast condition. ROT AND RUST.
Individual prices are higher, but we didnt make it too far into that discussion, as he is adament about ALL MUST GO AT ONCE..... Its a good price if I could buy a few, but 11 without titles OUCH!!!
Do the math.... I have. If I could make 3/4 of cash back just scraping the junk, then parting out the good stuff, I would yes make a few bucks, but it would take years off my life to maybe make a grand. If I were to persue titles, Id have to go the bonded route, which is more cost.
Seller wont break them up at all. Well not at that 300 price. He said he's just take them to the crusher. Even at 13-14 cents a pound he may get 200 a car. Thats what I offered him, and would take them all. No dice so far. Hes a nice guy, and loves his VW's, so he has his own sentiment that has a price.
Im going to call him a few more times.
Do I want it back Hell Yes..... but its not worth it.
My ole' 64 is pretty clapped out. No floors, No engine, crashed, doors are shot, sunroof and frame is bent, left heater channel broken in half, roof has been flexed due to the broken heater channel. May even have been on fire.... In my eyes its toast. If anyone would be willing to repair THIS ONE for sentiment it would be me. Its too far gone, and only maybe save the transaxle, beam, a few odds and ends, and the doors for a wall hanger.
If it were a KDF, Split, maybe even an Oval Id say maybe yes, but I could buy a decent 64 sunroof car and build the same thing, for way less money and way less of my own labor, and it would be better than the orignal. Its no VW38....
Maybe I can talk him into selling just this one, for my setimental reasons, but I doubt it. |
