I have a fiberglass dune buggy with a recently rebuilt 1600DP. It has a new 34-3 Bocar and a new SVDA Distributor. I had the same problem a week ago and replaced all the gaskets including the thin metal ones with the thicker fiber ones. I also replaced the 2 intake seals. I started it, I reset the carb and it ran great. I went to start it this morning and the same problem is there again, no off choke idle. If I put the fast idle cam on a higher step it runs but when I close the choke butterfly it runs smoother so I figure it is a vacuum leak. I'm thinking of switching to dual carbs? |

Is the idle cutoff valve working reliably?
Have you checked for vacuum leaks by spraying some starting fluid or WD40 or the like around your manfold and head?
The Bocar carbs aren't exactly known for the best quality, sometimes you get manufacturing debris in the passenges - that could cause idle issues. Pull the pilot jet on the right side of the carb and look at it, blow it out if you find anything in it, plus maybe try a blast of compressed air into that opening on the carb and see if that helps. |

Sorry, Yes I checked the idle selenoid and it's fine. Checked the jets, did the compressed aier also. I took the carb top off and it was clean inside. I'm convinced it's a vacuum leak but I guess my real question is would duasl carbs be a better less problem prone setup. I have a set of weber 34 ICT's and a new 009 distributor. I just hate to go to that if the more stock setup would be problem free. Most of the buggies I see have dual set ups? |

If you get the stock setup going then I think they would be better as an overall not-mess-with-it sort of viewpoint. But the baby Webers, if they are in good shape, (not worn on the throttle shafts, that is) would also be pretty decent once you got them dialed in and all that. I'm not sure which way I'd go - probably do a couple more attempts with the stock setup before I went in and started yanking parts off. How restricted is your access on this buggy, pretty decent? |

There is plenty of room to work on things but it's very annoying to get it all together and then have the same problem pop up again. The reason I thought duals would be better is that you have no vacuum on the distributor and limited areas for vacuum leaks on each of the intakes. It seems reasonable that if you had a vacuum leak you would be able to figure it out on which side. Plus there has to be a reason why most buggies and vw's period are running dual setups. I do wonder what the best dual set up would be, I see a lot of Kadrons. |
