Your gonna have to make a detailed thread on how to do this or tell us where to send our radios to so you can do them for us. That setup looks sweet.

I just bought this set-up. Yeah, it's cheap. But it'll play any type of burned CD, including WMA and MP3 disks. Plus it has slots for a jump drive, MP3 player, or SD card. And it has remote control. The abiliity to play jump drives is the main reason I purchased it. Putting 200 to 400 songs on a drive that'll fit in the ashtray is exactly what I needed. I hate keeping up with CD's. Peace!

Oh, I'm totally a fan of the iPod dock tucked away inside the ash tray. Excellent idea.

Just realized too I haven't posted my own audio setup. So here it is.

Head unit is a Jensen VM9312, with a 7" motorized retractable LCD touch screen. It'll play CDs, DVDs, videos, and iPods. Generally I have it hooked up to my 5th gen 30GB iPod, which fits nicely in one of the cup holders. When powered off, the screen folds away inside the unit and it looks like just a regular old CD player.

There's a Jensen MediaLink device underneath the dash, the iPod cable hooks in there and there's also extra inputs for more stuff to plug into the radio.

The aux wire is hooked up to where the door buzzer used to be in the fuse block. This way, the radio comes on automatically when you put the key in the ignition, rather than having to turn it to the "on" position and risk burning up my Pertronix.

The two front speakers were mounted inside the front kick panels, but I've since gotten new ones and I'm probably going to put the speakers in the door panels instead. There's also two rear speakers in the back. You can see one here.

And finally, I've got a little backup camera mounted inside a trailer hitch cover. It's activated by pulling the rear defrost knob on the dash :D The rear defroster didn't work anyways, and it was simple to pull the wire off and put a new one on. The radio has a certain wire that when you put 12V on it, the input automatically switches to the camera view. I had it hooked up to my backup light circuit before, so the backup camera would come on automatically when you put the bus in reverse, but it kept blowing the reverse light fuse. I went the knob route instead.

That's about it I guess. The stereo is designed to only show moving video (like from a DVD) if the parking brake is engaged, and there's a special wire you need to hook up to get it to work. Since there's really nowhere in the bus to plug it into, I found a code online that puts it into a factory diag mode, where you can disable the parking break override. So technically I could watch movies while driving down the road, although I don't. It controls the iPod pretty well though.

Yeah, I would love to see this too. I have not ever heard of anyone doing this, definitely cool.

I'm trying to interrupt my front speakers with a headphone stereo mini jack/switch to be able to listen to music while the rest of the bus sleeps. In theory I would turn the fade to all front, and plug in the headphone to interrupt the speaker circuit and send sound to the headphones. These stereo jack/switches have five posts. Do I run any stereo ground (-) to that post then interrupt the two (+)'s going to the left and right? I guess polarity would be pretty important in that case. Any help gratefully appreciated.

CatFish:
Yes, the same ground of the speakers must go to that pole in the jack/switch, the other 4 poles are two ins LR and two outs LR as well I recommend to use 1/4 jack so it will last longer, then use an adaptor for 1/8 headphones.

So I only interrupt the (+) going to each speaker. The (-) continue uninterrupted to each speaker and the ground for the jack/switch can be split from any (-) in the stereo system. Yes?

I have the exact same Jensen DVD player I installed a drop down 13" screen in the Head Knocker and can now enjoy laying in my z bed and watch flicks!!

And to add to the surround Sound.....

Very cool setup, thanks for the pics! I would love to do a similar setup, with a secondary display somewhere in the back. I just can't figure out a good location to mount an LCD panel though, and I don't know that I can bring myself to drill into the Westfalia cabinetry.

yes that is right all negatives are common, I did a mod on a 74 bay back in 1985, I put a dpdt switching the autostereo LR outputs and two headphone jacks, and all the negatives were connected together but if for some reason there is a mistake or a loose + touches the bus metal or the grounds, can blow a transistor, the jack switch must be isolated from the bus metal, it will work but could pick undesirable noises.

did you replace the stock spring that holds the hatch open?
I got 2 6 inch infinity's and mine slams closed.

Thanks joe. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Finally got my new panels fitted and installed. Unfortunately I decided I also wanted a stereo system so I had to take them back out to cut speaker holes into and figure out how to install a stereo system in place of the radio delete plate. Here's how I did it:

I traced my panels into thick sheets of plastic to make into a vapor barrier since my old one was non existent and I didn't want my new wood panels ruined. I glued them on with contact cement.

Here's the vapor barrier installed before the final trimming. Notice the blue respray. Thankfully it was painted back to the original color before I bought it.

I used a dremel tool and careful measurements to cut into the panels. After cutting the holes too small and grinding until the Alpine Type S speakers fit, I screwed them in and decided to cover the backs with plastic to protect from water in the door.

Put the panel back in and ran the wires through a small pre-existing hole in the frame. I had to drill into the other side though in order to pass the wires behind the kick panels. The only problem that occurred was the speakers were almost too low in the panels. Sheer luck let me close the doors with minor touching of the speaker cover to the front mat.

The Alpine head unit fit nicely and with a downloaded manual off the internet and a wire harness I purchased off of eBay I had no problems hooking up the stereo.

And of course the best part: ipod in the glovebox controlled by the head unit. I'm very happy with the end result and the system sounds great for only two speakers.
