Yup. After a few posts I'm thinking that this might be the way to go. Under the jumpseat behind the drivers seat. Doesn't matter so much where the bass goes so long as it's in there. Small amplifier would fit nicely in there as well. \m/

Ooooooo. Sub and amp all in one. Thanks a million for the heads up on this unit. It looks like it would fit nicely right behind the drivers seats as well. That's tight. Read some reviews online that seem very positive about this product as well. I'm adding this to the list.

Forgot to mention...if you do get a new stereo try to make sure it comes with a remote. Not that it's a big deal but it does come in handy when you're sitting in the back of the bus listening to tunes.

My first deck had a remote, but I found with the angle of the unit in the dash, I would have to stand up for the remote to make contact. Kind of annoying.

Mine isn't so bad but I know what you mean. It doesn't pick up from the outside and I do have to point it almost directly at the unit but when I'm in the back of the bus it beats climbing over the seats.

Hey Wander you need one more thing to really complement that set up. Satalite Radio (XM or Sirius). Especially you being a man of the road.

I'd thought about it but being a man of the Internet as well if I can't steal it I don't want it. ;)

Yeah, a turntable!

On my trip I stopped into a small town just outside of Mojave called Boron. Interesting little place that only drew my attention because of the gas sign. As I was driving around town I noticed hotrods everywhere. I guess this town is known for it's love of the greaser look. The gas station attendant had black boots, rolled up jeans and a pompadour hair style. He was working on a dragster when I showed up. I stopped into another store that advertised Jeans but as it turned out it was a geology shop, they just kept the original sign for nostalgia. Anyway, this dude had a kick ass hotrod out front AND it had the original turntable still in it that played 45's and 78's...the precursor to the 8 track! :)

I've been there and YES, it's a scene from the Twilight Zone..... But to be quite honest -> It's nice to experience that look and feel in this day and age of.... Well you know.

i think it's a little large to put behind the driver's seat. I liked it so much, I bought another and put it in my other car. They have a great sound for the size.

Whats you favorite cheap(er) 4 inch?

Here are some pics.

OK, I am going off topic a bit. I notice the cupholders? I take it that it "plugs" into the ash tray? I have a similar set but I tell ya, I can't shift for the life of me without bustin' me hand on it. Do you have this problem? I figure either it's too low or my shifter is way off...

Now to get back on topic..... I have an Alpine system and invested the extra $30 for the iPod connector. Maybe I'm just easily amused, but I dig this thing so much. I ran the connector to the glovebox and the iPod just stays in there out of sight (there is a lock but like the PO had a key :x ). Control it through the radio. Hey, for you "old timers" that aren't into this gadgetry, I tell you...go this route. It's like having a stack of CDs in your Bus.

The PO put the cupholder in. He made it himself out of wood. To answer your question, and you're going to hate me, nope. No problems with shifting because I don't shift. Old Dante is an automatic. :)

The Ipod stuff is way funky. I don't have one yet but have the connection for it in my bus. I hook up my minidisk to the stereo and the laptop as well. I love the hi tech toys in an old school ride. Tis funky.

Holy shit. Took me a few looks to catch onto what I was looking at. Is that in your bus???? Very funky. Got any Supertramp albums in there. Maybe some Boney M? hehe :)

I haven't done it yet but I have seen a system fitted to a suitcase. Speakers are mounted on one side and the CD player is on the other. The whole thing plugs into a cigarette lighter or silver socket. I would imagine that you could put an amp into the suitcase too provided you used 12 volt cooling fans and a vent screen. I am still looking for the right hard shell Samsonite. You couldn't get any more portable than this.

Why not try a Pelican Case? Very rigid plastic, and you could remove the foam from the speaker side but leave it around the player side to help protect the player a little more, Heck, they even sell em w/o the foam, if you'd prefer... They are pricey, but it may be cheaper than luggage, especially if you can find the right size at a good price. I think I got mine for my field recording gear from B&H Photo, which you can find at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ if your interested...

Currently I am working on an audio install myself. Not quite done yet, installed 2 speakers in the doors and 2 tweeters on the dash today. Still have 2 rear 4-way speakers to go and get the radio wired up.
I'll post some pics when it's booming! 8)

I just picked up a pair of kenwood 4" yesterday for the blown ones in the back. Im starting to think my audio system is screwed up besides the blown speakers. When I turn the (tape) deck on it sounds almost like im listening through a pair of maxed out headphones that arent on my head, only a little louder. Any Ideas if this is the deck thats messed up, the wiring?

4" speakers arent supposed to sound this weak I dont think.

I`m not sure where to put it. Is the red wire Hot?

Is this with the blown speakers still installed? Did it sound like that before they blew? I'm inferring that this is happening when you play a cassette tape, as that's what you appear to have said. Does it also happen with the FM/AM? If all speakers are connected and it does NOT happen with the AM/FM then it sounds to me like you've got a bad "play" head. Possibly also a bad tape motor, especially if it's slowing down at all.

Also, if the speakers were blown, but it worked ok with just your fronts, and now it's sounding this way with the new speakers, check to see what the output wattage is being provided from your head unit, and compare it to the required wattage for your new speakers. This problem could also be caused by the speakers needing more power to drive them, there by loading down your system and causing distorted sound.

Hope some of that helps. I may be new around here and not know much about the mechanics, but If I can do fighter jet electronics at work and audio stuff for fun, I think I can figure this VW thing out... :-D
Let me know if you need more help with this.
Matt
