i just read in the members section of cal-look.com that a '60 ghia ran 12.57 @ 108mph with a 1679 with nitrous and on radials! does anyone have anymore infon on this engine? can anyone tell me how much nitrous a mild 1776 could take before destruction?

spotspeed@yahoo.com Sun Apr 27, 2003 4:42 pm

I would go back to cal-look and get the guys e-mail.
A 1776...i have seen a turbo baja run 11.70's at somethen like 120....but that was a majorly BUILT 1776.
So it depends on what YOUR motor has in it.Details ...

There's a guy that posts on cal-look with a 1776 in his super that is runnin high 13's. The amount the motor would take on nitrous is dependent on two things. How good the parts are and making sure you don't run the engine on two little fuel. If the fuel pump can't keep up something will usually break with nitrous.

dantheveedubman@yahoo.com Sun Apr 27, 2003 10:24 pm

My engine has a counter weighted crank, balanced everything. anything that spins(even the fan) has been balanced together, the heads are 40x35.5 that are ported and polished, engle 120 cam, pertronix ignitor 009, 42 dcnf's. i know that my carbs pumps 550cfm each, so thats 1100 cfm. with a stock fuel pump and a fuel pressure regulator. i have an electric fuel pump, but i believe it is like a stock pump. it is an older build from approx. 10 years ago with maybe 30-40 thousand miles on it. i am considering on building a stroker motor but not if i can get equal performance outa this one. i read that NOS makes a VW specific sportman fogger system but its like $535.

Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go? In a 1679, you would have to pour a really big shot of NOS to the motor. Must be another part of this combo he's not sharing. Not saying it cant be done, just saying that that motor will be short lived with that much squeeze.

It is not mainly the NOS he is dumping, but I bet the "COMPRESSION RATIO" is high as you know what! That is where your free horsepower comes in. But it will run hot and overheat for a daily driver. And I bet it ain't a daily driver either.
Thanks, Rick

1915 cc motor 40 x 35.5 valves fk-8 cam 52 IDA's 8.0:1 compression and 1 5/8 header 1700 pound car runs consistant 12.70's on the motor and 11.20's on a 100 shot of NAWSSSSSS. use good parts and it will live a long time, I know from expreiance. JerryS Misbehavin Racing

i had a 1915 with almost all the same things that you have and i only got it into the 14's and i never used nitros only babies ues bottles.

so what ever happen to this race???????

Tim rag'59 Thu Jan 29, 2004 7:53 pm

I'm a little late in this thread but, who know's how much this car weighed in at? what was his final drive ratio? gear ratios? these things and power of course, gets these kind of times. Veteran vw drag racers will tell you that from experience. Not that I'm a "old time vw"drag racer but I've been draggin' muscle cars for years and to get those sleds down the quarter in a respectable time slot is a feat in it's self, yeah a "big-block" camaro is good for 12's-but the other guys got his in the 11's, it never ends. Weight is key and power-to-weight ratio is very important,so that's probably how he managed to get those kind of times with his(or her)ghia, I'm assuming anyway. Remember the blown split window from the sixties? that car did high 11's with a singleport motoR, the Inch Pincher? yeah, I know those were drag cars and there are plenty out there but, How about Feb.'94 Mike Smith's '67, that did 12's! full bodied steel!! Damn, I eat this stuff up. These carS kick a@#!

NAWSSS!! I hate that "rice" word.
I'd like to see what a built 1776cc would run. That is what I want to build.

as for the baby bottles... you should get a plate that reads:

BOTL FED

Tim rag'59 Fri Feb 06, 2004 8:23 pm

That's what mike was runnin' in the '67. A 1776,12to1 compression and N.O.S. It gave him a 12 second quarter in a full bodied sedan.pretty respestable. wonder what the reliablity is on an engine with 12 to 1 compression... you know she runs hot. I've got 9 to 1 and I'd love to go up but I don't know if I want to chance it.....Yet.

Eric "The Volksnut" Sorg has run a 12.30 in his 1679 buggy which has a CAST CRANK!!

More details are at www.thevolksnut.com
The site is a little out of date but you'll get the picture.

WOW.

lol. a friend just found this thread and showed it to me.
this is my car that he was asking about.

Talk about old memories.

dinosaur thread bring back.

Last season I ran a 12.5:1 compression, 2110, normal aspirated with NO NOS on slicks. My best time was 12.2 @ 107mph.

Drag bug, yes, but still N/A with nothing else, except 110 octane gas.

This year will be the same base engine, with Hilborn running alcohol @ about 14:1 comp.

Should be fun.

I would still like to see a 1776 made the run that was claimed. Hell, maybe I need to give this NOS stuff a try...?

YMMV,
Tom

Use these super squish pistons and you can bump the compression to 14:1
