View original topic: How far can I push it

Ok, here goes: '74 std, 1641dp completely rebuilt from new crank outwards. New BOCAR 34PICT3 with 135 jet, 009 dizzy, Kadron single quiet pack. Rear tyres are slightly over size.
Now this engine has 1200 miles on it, and its free-ing up nicely. In fact it flies along. So here's the Q: how fast can I safely push it and what should it redline at? The car just wants to keep on accelerating when you get it going and it doesnt feel laboured at all. It feels happy at 75 - 80, but I want to know if this is within its limits.
As always, thanks in advance
Rob

I think you will be alright.... I took my 1970 Std. up to 105mph with a single port 1500 before. I would go all day long that fast (as long as there were no hills) but at the end of the day what are you left with? I blew that motor up in three years.. but it was a good three years

nope guys, back in the day there was a kadron exhaust. very similar to the bugpack glasspack you can get today, except the kadron exhaust had the wide 3 bolt flange just like an american car. Most of them where tripple plated chrome to boot.

Yeah and they had a cool decal that said Kadron with checkers after it. Back then the checkers were as cool as the iron cross today.

Didn't want to come off raw, just hadn't seen that for a long time too. My neighbor growing up had one for his 62 bug and he polished that focker EVERY single day!

VWs with stock cranks and carbs are quite happy at higher revs. If you realy want to hurt your engine lug it around in the lower rpms. If fact, early vws were advertised that they could go all day long at full throttle. The reason for this is that the VW engine is underbuilt or internally restricted with safe limits such as stroke, bore, air intake, etc... Thus, you have to learn to drive your VW different then you would your domestic counterpart.

I've seen the various books that say the engine was built to run all day flat out, but I was unsure if this still applied to a 30 yr old block. Can the engine be over revved?

After about 5g's you shout start thinking about your stock crank and fan....

Yep, an engine upgrade is next on the cards. Something big! ;)
