is it easy to get your vw smogged for the DMV if you have a beefed up engine.

1835 or higher?

thanks

no

If it is 74 or newer I believe you must get it smogged, if it is older than that no smog at all

If is too new and has to be smogged, Your best bet would be to borrow a stock motor and use that for smog, and then refit your motor as soon as you are done.

Smog laws could be changing in CA. Proposal SB 708 would have NO exemptions for any model year, and CHP would have random roadside inspection areas where they will do emissions screening from the car and you (DUI checkpoint incorporated). Then they can fine you and send you into an endless loop of pouring money into your vehicle and the smog/repair community.

Will be a big money maker for this poorly-managed state. Bastards. Write your CA state senator and tell them NO!

1974 does not need to be smogged so its 1974 on down as of this year

thank you for the clarification. I guess I can finally go get a VW thing!

About the smag law deal, Yah, write to the lawmakers, but please don't use forms. They get you a nice little form letter in return. If you really mean it, please right them in your own words. It will mean a lot more to them, believe me. I personally delived 500 handwritten letters last time it was a big problem, when they were smogging everybody by the case #. (Remember that?? YIKES!!!!)

I live in SAC, and know some lobbyists, thet say we don't need to worry about this one, it has almost no momentum, (it would require cars that have never had to pass smog in CA, to now somehow magically pass 30 years later) but please write anyway! Jay Leno has personally been calling the lawmakers to vote no on this, and he dosent even live in CA!!!

If you have any questions ask CARB (California Air Resources Board). They are very nice there and will answer any and all of your questions.

I wouldn't buy a car until I talked to them first.

Yes, I agree with Erik -- never use those cookie cutter forms that some special interest groups create. And even email is subject to a delete key from what I've heard. I've both emailed and snail mailed legislators, and have received formal replies from my typed letters but only bot email receipt confirmation on the others.

Good to hear that this Bill has no momentum. The whole idea is flawed, unless you're a bankrupt state looking to financially sodomize your population some more.

And since I'm ranting -- you know that MTBE crap that California just had to add to the fuel consumed here? We pay $.20 more per gallon for this stuff when the federal fuel is just fine. The difference in emissions is almost immeasurable, certainly not worth the tradeoff. The fuel mileage goes down about 10-15%, so where is the savings? You have to burn more of it to go the same distance! It not only mucks up the ground water, but it's a big contributor to premature fuel line failures.

Yep, we got more VW's in California, but also a disproportionate number of vehicle fires as well (not just VW's).

And CARB is a bureaucratic bungle of incompetents and cheaters - they work in cahoots with energy companies to bilk the public and produce fraudulent reports. I wonder how many ex-CARB employees now work for the oil companies in cushy consumer-paid-for positions?

MTBE- or as I like to call it, Mean Time Between Empty. They started pumping that here in Louisville, KY. recently, so I drive the 5 miles across the river to IN for cheaper gas and better performance.

I read somewhere that they are pulling it because it pollutes groundwater and there is no effective way to make it non-poison.
