I have a Solex 30 pict 1 on a 1600 single port. It appears to be running rich at high speed (60 mph) and under a load. There is black smoke coming from the exhaust under these conditions.
What would be the best place to start to correct this?

First check the choke make sure it has power running to it and opens fully when warm.

take the brass 13mm bowl drain plug/ out and see what size jet it has in it...
( someone may have installed too large a jet at some point?) more than 125?

Take the top off the carb and make sure the float doesn't have a hole in it and that the needle/seat combo is good ( it could be flooding the bowl)

Have you done any of the required maintenance lately like, valves, points/ timing etc?

Thanks for the reply. I just bought the car. It's a 63 ragtop that needs some minor adjustments. The po told me he has just done the valves, points, timing, etc. I checked the parts he said he replaced and they are new.
I'll start going down the list of items you suggested and let you know the results. Thanks again.

PS get a coffee can or some thing to put under the bowl when you pull the 13mm brass plug out! good luck, it may just be the choke stuck or not heating up going off properly...

OK, the choke was not opening fully. I disabled the automatic choke with the butterfly valve fully open per John Muir's book.

The jet was a 125.

The float looked fine, no visible problems.

I'll take it out on the highway and see how it runs at about 60 mph.
Thanks again.
