View original topic: installing/tuning solex 34 dual carbs

Since my Solex 34 pict 3 gave up the ghost I decided to take a leap and purchase the solex 34 dual carbs from CB performance. I am putting them on a 1600 dp with 009 dist. in a 67 dlx bus. Although I have gleaned and read a lot of information on dual carbs from the internet, etc., and I have a pretty good grasp now (after playing with my old carb) of the basics of carburation, I have never had dual carbs in my vws before. I would appreciate any advice generally on dealing with dual carbs and specifically if anyone else has experience with these cb carbs. Thanks, John

I just finished installing a set of these carbs on my own engine. They were probably the easiest I've done. The kit is very un-complicated, the linkage simple. I bolted them to the engine, hooked up fuel lines and balance tube. Installed the bell crank, and fired it up. The chokes worked great, and once warmed up were very simple to sync. Then hooked up linkage re'checked sync, they were good to go. I'm very pleased with the kit. I did have to change idle jets. They were to lean for my engine .45's I needed .50's Enjoy them, Steve>

Thanks so much for the input. I'm looking forward to installing them this next week.

Steve,
I'm curious what engine you're running the carbs on that you needed a bigger idle jet? I'm wondering whether I will need a bigger one. However, I am also curious: my idle jet has the number 50 on it, which I assume refers to the size .50, but you state that .45 idle jets came on your pair; am I confused?

I was hoping for some better gas mileage from my duals, but maybe I'm overly optimistic. I've played with the mixture a bit because I think I was running too rich to begin with, but now I've been hovering at about 18-19 mpg. Now, granted this is with a family of six and luggage on a 2000 mile trip. Perhaps I am unfairly comparing it to my 65 ghia which gets 25+ mpg!

Also, anyone that has installed these dual solexs have advice on where to hook the springs? I've played with several set-ups for them and currently have them hooked together from one carb to the other. Other idea? CB performance does not specify what to do with them.

Thanks,

John (enjoying the sunny Okanagen for a while)

JOHN, I'M RUNNING THE CARBS ON A 1915CC ENGINE. THE COMPRESSION IN 7:1, STOCK VALVE (STAINLESS) HEADS, HEMI CUT AND UNSHROUDED BIG, 76CC. STOCK CAM, 1.5 RATIO ROCKERS. THE ENGINE HAS 120LBS STATIC COMPRESSION. ZERO LEAKDOWN, TOTAL SEALS. I HAVE ONLY RUN THE ENGINE ON THE FLOOR, MY CAR IS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF BODY WORK AND PAINT. SO SOME MORE JET CHANGES MY BE NEEDED. I CAN'T BEGIN TO GUESS THE MILAGE. I RAN THE SPRING FROM THE BELLCRANK TO ONE OF THE FLAPPER SCREWS ON THE FAN SHROUD. ONE SPRING SHOULD BE ENOUGH.

JOHN, I MISSED PART OF YOUR QUESTION. YES IF YOUR IDLE JET HAS A 50 ON IT, ITS A .50. EACH KIT MUST BE DIFFERENT. WHO KNOWS. STEVE
