View original topic: Popping through exhaust....

I'm stumped. I've got an 1835 with a w110 cam, Mallory billet distributor w/adjustable curve and single points, Mallory Promaster coil, Dellorto 45's with 170 mains and 70 idle jets, and a rotary fuel pump regulated to 3.5 psi. This past weekend I drove the car around in the morning, no problems at all. I started the car in the afternoon and it imediately started popping out the exhaust, mainly at idle.

I checked the timing, the valves, changed the fuel filter, checked for any exhaust leaks, cleaned and blew out the main and idle jets and still the thing complains when idling.

Any suggestions?

check to see if there is any trash in the carbs.. how long have you been running this motor?

sounds like one carb is leading the other at idle. do you have a sync tool? also syncing at idle should be done with the linkage disconnected then reinstall them making sure the idle does not change while you do it and then make sure they open at the exact same time and you should be good to go since you checked all those other things first.

I'm just coming up to 5000 miles. I've got new K&N filters on it so I kinda ruled out crap being suck in but I guess stranger things have happened. It just seemed strange the way it happened so suddenly.

i agree wit rizzag, sounds like a un-sync'd carbs. with only 5000 miles on it, i'd say carbs are prolly still sync'd, butthe linkage is probably off. dels are notorious for linkage settings changing. what we used to do on any aluminum linkage, was get it set, and weld the arm to the cross shaft. or if you have time, drill another set screw hole for the arm. also, you nversaid if the carbs were new, or used when you put them on. grab the throttle shaft, an try to move it up/dn, or side/side, if it moves...theres your problem. good luck

you could also have a crappy seal between the head and the intake manifolds...aka, an intake manifold leak...Goods luck.

drtrcr1025...I've run in to the same problem. I just installed a new billet linkage set so I drilled and tapped into the hex bar and used longer set screws to avoid that problem. Thanks for the advise.

Indianavwkid....found a stud that had loosened up between the carb and manifold. I think it was enough to allow air through.

Second problem and I think my main one was my points were sticking so the arm wasn't always riding on the surface of the rotor lobe. They were only partially opening. It was strange because if I just touched them they'd pop back to the proper position. Swaped them for a new set and it seems good to go.

Some pics of the finished product.
