View original topic: When is the scheduled timing belt change on a 2.0L '97 GTI?

The manual recommends changing the belt at 60k miles for the TDI, but makes no mention of the schedule for the 2.0L engine.

I'm just about to turn 60k and I'd like to nip it in the bud.

Thanks! :)

Do it at 60k.

I had a belt break at 68k and it destroyed the head on a 2.0l 16v engine.

some have them snap at 40k some have them snap at 130k...or never even!

just do it around 60k :P.

FYI - The 1993-99 Bentley says:

"Volkswagen does not specify a replacement interval for the camshaft drive belt on gasoline engines. However the publisher recommends the belt be inspected periodically and replaced at least every 90K miles or 5 years"

However, in another part of the manual they say the same thing, only with 60K miles and 4 years as the intervals. Go figure.

VW said they were good for the life of the car, They broke with as little as 45k on them, and to kick the Vw owner when they were down Vw refused to warranty them. Do it every 50k -60k, Make sure you are using a Conti belt and a new tensioner.
